 NWD group photo - croppedGreetings!
At our chapter's annual planning meeting in January, we made it a goal to raise our visibility as an organization. In recent months, we have made great strides in this direction, locally and globally! Over 70 people attended our Annual Networking Day at the Arts Club of Washington, which attracted many new members. On the international level, several members of the WCA leadership had the opportunity to share information about WCA with a group of Korean visitors as part of the State Department's "Building Bridges" program. Marilyn Hayes and I represented WCA by invitation of May Yoneyama Gwinn at the May Rotary Club meeting in Washington, DC. The meeting featured guest speaker Bob Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, an umbrella organization for all of the major arts organizations in the U.S.

Locally, a number of WCA members are exhibiting at Art-o-matic over the next few weeks, and the Northern Virginia Network has been created to provide a monthly gathering for members to share their art and ideas with one another. This fall, WCA members will join together for an Exhibition with the Girls Gotta Run Foundation in Takoma Park, MD. See the articles below for more information about these events and activities.

Thanks to all chapter members who have helped us raise our visibility as women in the arts!

Letter to the Editor:
First Friday in Dupont Circle and other Ad Hoc activities

The Yahoo Group is a great way to get information out to our group and once you get the hang of it - it is easy.  That is what I learned from my recent attempt to tell everyone about the plan to meet to go to First Friday in Dupont Circle on May 2nd.  In the end the message went out too late to be effective but I am hooked on this Yahoo Group!  If you have not joined yet, be in touch with Sharon Burton and respond to her email invitation.  Sharon's email is sharon@geminivisionsart.com .

First Friday in Dupont Circle - May 2nd was a great evening.  A group of us did meet - Jennifer Judelsohn, Marilyn Hayes, and I along with the men's auxiliary.  Along the way we met Joan Tarbell too.  The weather was perfect and the art was varied and interesting.  We got a chance to meet and talk to a number of artists whose art was on display and others who are going to be having exhibitions soon.  One artist, Roberta Thole, a woman from Northern Virginia, had a series of paintings on copper - in the Studio Gallery upstairs.  You should see them if you get a chance.  The palette and texture are really different.  She does not have a website, so in person is really the answer.  It is worth the trip!

I want to urge every member of WCA/DC to join the Yahoo Group and look at the postings.  Also, I want to urge us all to use the Yahoo Group to get the word out about the great things to do in our art community.  My new office is now in Dupont Circle and I will be planning to go to First Fridays as often as I can.  I will let everyone know by the Yahoo Group the next time.  On Sunday, May 18th we had "Breakfast with the elephants" - a sketch trip to the National Zoo. In June we are going to Art-o-Matic the same week as First Friday, please join us - mark your calendar for June 5th.

See everyone soon.

WCA/DC participates in International Visitor Leadership Program
by Katie Weaver

    Korea Meeting

On Friday April 25th, I had the honor of meeting with a group traveling to the US from South Korea as part of the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program entitled "Building Bridges." The visitors are considered important contributors in their country and serve as activists promoting social welfare and education in diverse areas of Korean civil society. They included Ms. Kwang Kee Choi, who currently serves as a board member of the Feminist Cultural Events Organization in South Korea.

Current WCA National President Marilyn Hayes and National Advisor Holly Dodge joined me to share information about WCA's role in promoting and supporting women artists in the United States. With the assistance of simultaneous translators, we answered various questions about the structure and goals of our group, as well as the unique qualities that keep our organization strong. At the end of the meeting, Ms. Sang Won Cho presented us with a book of photography by her brother-in-law. We hope to have future conversations with participants of this program, as well as potential collaborations with the representatives from Korea.

Connecting at the WCA/DC Networking Day 2008
by Robin M. Gilliam, Web of Life Art Studio

As an artist, I love to spend time in my art studio and get lost in the creative process - the paints, found objects, and mixed media - creating order out of chaos.  But the life of an artist can also be a lonely one. That is why I signed up for the WCA/DC Networking day - to connect with other creative women, and I did.

"Over 70 people attended Networking Day on April 5th. The morning panel discussion was called Art & Your Audience: Maximizing the Artist-Gallery relationship. Three panelists spoke, including Adah Rose Bitterbaum from the Studio Gallery, Nevin Kelly from the Nevin Kelly Gallery, and Natalya Parris from the city of Gaithersburg Galleries. There was also a presentation by the WCA Philadelphia chapter entitled "Women Helping Women: Stitch by Stitch". This was a collaborative project with Rubia, an organization that helps provide women in Afganistan with sustainable business opportunities. For the project, WCA artists around the country created a quilt using traditional Afgani motifs."

My favorite part was the Art Share.  When I show my art I often feel vulnerable like I am hanging a piece of my soul out there for all to criticize.  But here among strangers, I felt connected and safe.

I was pleasantly surprised and delighted at all the wonderful artwork.  I love to hear about the creative process and the choices artists make in developing their pieces.  What I appreciated most, was the safe environment that the WCA/DC created for connecting and sharing our artwork.
