Greetings!
Welcome to the inaugural WCA/DC electronic newsletter! As our chapter continues to grow (we now have over 100 members) we realized that we need better and more efficient ways to communicate. At the annual Planning Meeting on January 26th, with more than 20 members in attendance, we explored possible ways the chapter could keep up with everything that is going on. Therefore, we are increasing our visibility on the web and staying in touch with everyone, no matter how tech-savvy they were. We are pleased to share the new WCA/DC Communications Plan outlined below, which offers many ways to stay connected with members and share your creative milestones.

We also have a selection of articles about recent and upcoming exhibitions and educational activities. If you have a program idea you would like to implement this year (or an article you would like to write!), please let us know.

Hope to see you at Networking Day April 5th!

WCA/DC Organizes Forum to Mark the 35th Anniversary of the Feminist Art Movement

Barbara Wolanin

"Opening Doors: Women in Art 1972-2007 had an audience of about one hundred people on Sunday, November 11, 2007, in the recital hall of the new Katzen Arts Center at American University. The panel explored the topic of whether the feminist art movement has made a difference and how our lives as women in the arts and the art world have changed since 1972.

The forum was motivated by two anniversary feminist art exhibitions in view in Washington - Katzen Arts Center's show entitled "Claiming Space: Some American Feminist Originators," co-curated by Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard, and "WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution," at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Fall 2007.

Historical and personal perspective was provided by moderator Josephine Withers, a pioneer in the field of women's studies. The panelists were selected to represent a range of cultural professional, and generational perspectives. They included artist and activist Judy Byron, HIRO, an Asian-American painter, multi-media performance artist, curator, and lecturer,   Joyce J. Scott the African-American sculptor, jeweler, printmaker, installation and performance artist, and Victoria Reis, the co-founder and director of the Transformer, an arts organization that promoted emerging artists.

The forum was made possible by Mary Garrard, one of WCA's Lifetime Achievement awardees, and co-sponsored by the Washington, DC chapter of ArtTable, which along with WCA is a Founding Program Partner of the Feminist Art Project.
WCA Exhibition with Girls Gotta Run Foundation in October 2008
Margaret Paris

This fall WCA/DC will partner with the Girls Gotta Run Foundation on an exhibit that addresses the theme of shoes, running or motion. A portion of sales will go to the foundation which helps girls in Ethiopia to buy running shoes. To run, the girls must stay in school and if they stay in school they will not get married and have babies at the age of 12 years old, often with serious health problems because of their young age.

The exhibit will be at the galleries at the Takoma park Municipal Center, Takoma Park, MD.

Each WCA/DC member can submit one piece for an entry fee of $25.00. Our goal is to have 50 members participate; 20 artists from the GGR Foundation will be part of the exhibit. The entry fee is $25.00. Each artist will receive 30 invitations. Watch for registration details via email. You may register at Networking Day or by mail. If you have questions contact Exhibition Chair Margaret Paris margparis@comcast.net
