Celebrating Women at The Brickhouse: Let's Play with Clay!

To celebrate Women's History Month, the Brickhouse Gallery (2837 36th St., Sac) will display the multicultural artwork of several local artists during the month, including me.
From 2 to 4 PM on March 3rd, I will give a brief Artist Talk about the influence of women on my artwork, how the work has evolved from fabric to clay to metal, as well as a fun clay demonstration. I will also bring plenty of extra clay for those of you wanting to try your hand at carving clay pendants (NOTE: Panama Pottery will fire your carved pendants for free). Click for more info

March 5th & 6th: Empty Bowls Fundraiser at the Convention Center
|
Empty Bowls is River City Food Bank's (RCFB) largest fundraising event to raise awareness in the fight against hunger in Sacramento County. Empty Bowls 2011 was attended by more than 1,100 people and raised more than $106,000, 96% of which directly funded RCFB's food programs. This year they hope to raise more than $125,000 to help meet the growing need in our community. The evening soup supper (5:30 to 7:30 PM on March 5th) and two luncheon seatings (11:30-12:29 or 12:30-1:30 PM on March 6th) will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center (J St. and 14th St). The evening soup supper features wine, appetizers, gourmet soup from Classique Catering and bread and desserts donated by some of Sacramento's finest restaurants. Luncheon guests will enjoy a simple meal of soup from great local restaurants, bread, cookies and water. All attendees will select one of over 1,500 beautiful handmade bowls donated by professional potters, glass artists, wood turners, and area students to take home with them as a reminder of the many in our community that are hungry and face an empty bowl each day.
Above are the bowls that I contributed - one of them could become yours! Along with some other artists, I will be present at both days of the event with more of my bowls, hearts, and goddesses for your gift-giving pleasure. Here's how to get tickets to the event: Click Here

Creativity Cannot be Intimidated
| ... I had been so used to having my own studio, that I was sorely out of practice with bringing tools and supplies and working with other people in a classroom setting. I was totally lost and felt intimidated, which is not something that happens often to me! ...
My latest blog entry talks about how we put up blocks to creativity by becoming intimidated or scared, and how we can push past those feelings to let our inner glow shine again. You may read more here.

Art Collectors Expand Their Art Collection
|
At a show at Master Barber and Beauty Shop last fall, which celebrated the Harlem Renaissance, I had the great pleasure of meeting David and Cheryl Sims. We talked a lot about my "The Fetishes" clay piece (left in picture), which was based on the work of Lois Mailou Jones that she created in the 1920s.
In fact, they liked the piece so much, they bought it! Here is a picture of Cheryl with the work hanging proudly in her home.
Do feel free to e-mail me pictures of your Kanika art. It warms me so much to see where my creations now reside.
