Of Love & Remembrance

Greetings!

At the beginning of a new year, during the month of love and remembrance of ancestors who gave us today's blessings, we know that anything is possible.  But can you teach an old dog new tricks?  Read on ...

Painting by Shona McDaniels at SojoTwenty-Eight (28) museums from the greater Sacramento area will be open during the Annual Sacramento Museum Day Celebration.  Remembering those who made today possible, at the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum, 2251 Florin Road in Sacramento, the theme will be "A Celebration of Children, Diversity and Culture".  This theme will welcome and embrace all cultures and all art forms (visual and performance) from five local schools.  Admission is free.  Food will be available for $3.00 (Barbecue Hot Dog, Chips and Drink).

There will be lots of activities for everyone, including: children/youth exhibit, cultural performances, cultural food demos, face painting, story-telling, cultural art activities, and an "All Around the World" fashion show facilitated by Phoenix Park Community. The participating Schools/Community Organizations are: Parkway Elementary, Yav Pem Suab Academy, Rosa Parks Junior High, Alice Birney Waldorf, Phoenix Park Community and Family Roberts Development Center.

"Hearts for the Arts" Silent Auction Feb 8th, 6-9 PM

Heart Links
Kanika's "Heart Links" Platter

Artists, community leaders and local heroes were invited to produce a heart-themed piece of art or embellish a basic valentine with their own interpretations. These "heart-works" will be auctioned off at the "Hearts for the Arts" benefit event on Wednesday February 8th from 6 to 9 p.m. at Alex Bult Gallery, located at 1114 21st Street Suite B, Sacramento, with lively entertainment, refreshments, and an A-list of guests.

Join me, other artists, and friends for a great evening at the newest hotspot in town, Alex Bult Gallery! Enjoy small bites and cocktails while listening live music by Clemón, and mingling with the who's who of Sacramento! Watch and participate in an amazing live auction by David Sobon!  My "Heart Links" wall piece will be auctioned off, among selected other original artworks.

All proceeds are donated to Any Given Child that seeks to ensure every child in a K-8 school has access to high quality arts experiences. The program has already reached 37,000 students in 89 classrooms in two schools. Artists worked alongside classroom teachers to help make science, math and history concepts come alive through music, dance, theatre, digital and visual arts.

Tickets for Hearts for the Arts are $30 in advance; $40 at the door. Metro Edge Members receive a special price of $20 in advance. Opportunities for sponsorship are available for those who are interested in supporting Any Given Child at a higher level. Contact Michelle Alexander at michelle@sacabc.org or (916) 607-7170. Kanika's clay art
Hearts and Goddesses

Surprise your Valentine with special heart-related gifts from me and my  artist friends at Sunlight of the Spirit, 2314 J Street, in Sacramento.

I have a wide variety of Heart sculptures at Sunlight of the Spirit, Brickhouse Gallery #4, the Kuumba Collective Art Gallery, and directly from my website

My brand new Heart Pockets are also at Sunlight of the Spirit; they may hold water for cut flowers, incense sticks, or other items (they are also beautiful as is).

Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?
Over one month had passed since retiring from my day job of 36 years.  After hosting a holiday studio show, preparing for Christmas, participating in a Kwanzaa show at the Crocker Art Museum, hosting a party on New Years Day, and thoroughly reorganizing my closet, it was time to focus on doing something different for the Annual Valley Sculpture Artists competition.

As detailed in several previous blogs, working with recycled metal has become one of my latest manias (Metal Mania, Bliss in the Studio, A Day in the Metal Shop).  But I never tried applying colored patinas to the metal ... until now.
My latest blog entry describes the latest chapter in my search for artistic exploration.  Can you teach an old dog new tricks?  READ HERE

 THANK YOU!

I truly appreciate your support of my art.  Any time you want to add something extra special to your art collection, please let me know.
