Teeming with Life Tile Sculpture
August Art News

Greetings!

Summer is finally here with some HOT Sacramento days and balmy nights. We just came back from a 9-day vacation in Mendocino, California, amongst the redwoods and Pacific Ocean.  How refreshing!  Because I am still in relax mode, I think I'll stop by the Banana Festival Saturday morning at William Land Park, then flit around to the Kuumba Collective Art Gallery, Blue Moon Gallery, and the Brick House Gallery during the Second Saturday Art Walk this month at night (6-9 PM).  Won't you join me?

Commissions Can Be Fun and Rewarding!
FlowersMy artist friends, Dee and Ken Tschida, approached me last month with their desire to have a garden art piece for their yard.  I took great delight in showing Dee and a friend of hers my new recycled steel flowers, some water fountains, and some finished and unfinished LED/lighted pieces.
Tschida commission first option
After selecting a couple of the flowers, they also settled upon an in-progress 4-foot x 4" x 4" multi-colored stella (at right).  I had intended to insert a rope light inside the piece so the adhered glass pieces on the outside would light up beautifully.

But Dee and her husband have a garden full of solar lights. They wanted a somewhat small outdoor sculpture to fit underneath a tree and they did not want an electrical cord spreading across their lawn.  So I researched whether there were solar rope lights.  Lo and behold Home Depot in Elk Grove had one set of solar rope lights, 16' long, that they had just received in stock on trial.  That was the only place that I could find in the Sacramento/Elk Grove area.  I spent a couple of weeks testing the lights to make sure they would be bright enough.  Tschida topper

Solar lights do not have the same bright light output as electrical, though, so I recommended that instead of the rather flat plate top that we agreed upon (at right), it might be nice to have some LEDs coming out of the top of the sculpture (left).  I e-mailed Dee and Ken several samples of steel toppers with different lighting configurations.  Viola!  They selected something similar to this topper for their commissioned piece.

I am delighted that the piece fit so well into their landscape.  Now if only they can train their pet bunny to leave the solar collector/charger alone! LOL
Another Happy Home is Found
Camils FlowerMy art-loving friend, Camil, was kind enough to send me a picture of her new recycled steel flower that is now gracing her front porch area.

It looks so welcoming, with its open arms and face tilted up to let the sunlight bounce off its blue and copper colors from the propane torch.

Thank you, Camil, for letting me see what your newest Kanika art piece looks like in your lovely home!
