Teeming with Life Tile Sculpture
Spring Has Sprung in the Studio (and Beyond)

Greetings!

The last few days have been magical after all of those rainy days!  The daffodils started blooming last week, the salvia are making their colorful appearance, and the grass is growing like strong green weeds.  The sun flows over my energy center in the house. It is AWESOME!  And this month will be AWESOME for art in Sacramento too.
SAAAC on April 2nd

Another great Sacramento African American Art Walk is planned for April 2nd.  Read more about all of the events on Facebook.  I'll be at the Kuumba from 2:45 to about 4 PM to personally show you my mother's watercolor paintings, and I may slide by The Brickhouse for a hot minute after that.

Featured Artist for a Community Project

Autumn GoddessThe Kuumba Collective Art Gallery has asked me to be the Featured Artist for April, just like last year.  I have several new pieces for you to see at that show in April.

But I wanted to do something different this year.  What about having the community build a special totem out of fabric, beads, leather, paper, metal, and found objects?  To participate in this fun project, stop by the gallery on Second Saturday, April 9th, between 6 and 9 PM and help build a community totem. You can bring your own pieces to add or can use some treasures from our stores.

The gallery will also be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 6 PM, if you cannot make it on Second Saturday.

Location: 1001 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, CA, 95815, 916-613-0099.

Totems and Plates at Blue Line Gallery

Sisters Under the Skin

How fun is this?  One of my all-time favorite ceramic artists, Tony Natsoulas, was the judge for a show about ceramic plates and clay-based totem poles.   You Light Up My Life

The inventiveness of the Plates and Totems submissions is not to be believed!

The show is from April 7th to May 14th, and the Artist Reception is on April 16th, from 7-9 PM.

Location: Blue Line Gallery, 405 Vernon Street #100, Roseville, CA 95678, CA 95678, (916) 783-4117.

Sneak Peak at the 20-20 Show in May

20-20 tiles

It was with a heavy heart that artists and art patrons learned that the beloved 20th Street Gallery was going to close late last year in Sacramento, CA.  One of the many special art shows that the 20th Street Gallery was known for was their 20-20 show where 20 8"x8" pieces of art were created within 20 days.  Co-owner, Joanie Ferry, kindly offered to let the Kennedy Gallery, located down the street, take over the highly popular 20-20 show this year.  I found out last month that my submission, "Six Degrees of Separation," was juried into the show which will run in May 2011!  Read more here . . .

Art that Warms the Heart

I had a special studio show the last week in March 2011.  The first person who came to the show was a lady I met six or seven years ago at a funky little Sacramento Potters Group "Seconds" art show.  I saw her at a couple more shows then invited her to my 2007 studio show where she purchased one of my most important pieces Originsof art.  It was a pivotal piece:  the first tile mosaic piece that finally got my work into the Doiron Gallery. Once at the Doiron, the marketing director of a developer next door commissioned me to make three large tile mosaics for their building.  AND the Doiron gave me the opportunity to work with fabulous painter/sculptor Anne Bradley, and clay artist Chris Kubi, to create a huge mixed media commission piece for their lobby.  So this original tile mosaic changed my whole art style and made me the artist I am today.

Since the 2008 show, my customer had purchased several other pieces from other galleries and art shows.

Last month, I made my first piece of furniture:  a cool table with a black and white tile top.  That same lady arrived at the beginning of last week's studio show and, after careful deliberation, snapped the table top up to add to her Kanika collection.  I delighted in telling her about the importance of both of those pieces to me personally and to my art business.  That created a special bond between us.  I am so happy that she, of all people, got that piece.

Voyeurs Table

Having a relationship between artist and customer is more than just a monetary transaction.  There is an exchange of information about the inspiration for the piece, how it was made, and the significance of the work, but also the emotion behind the having the work go to someone who loves it.  I am so delighted that she was able to get yet another of my firsts!

Check out our website, www.KanikaMarshall.com, and see if we can start a new art relationship together.  I am starting to consider certain types of commissions, so contact me if there's something you have in mind for a mixed-media sculpture.
