Greetings!
It's finally time for the Mudcloth Madness Show! What is mudcloth? How do you use it? And why would you celebrate it? And what's that about "Bold Expressions" in Carmichael and a Sculpture Show in Loomis? There are lots of unusual art-related stories in this month's newsletter. Read on and . . .
Enjoy your Blessings, Kanika

It's Mudcloth Madness at the Kuumba Collective in October!
I've been waiting for this show for months and I'll only give you a sneak peek at one of the pieces I submitted for the first ever Mudcloth Madness Art Show at the Kuumba Collective Gallery from October 4th to October 31st.
What is Mudcloth Madness? Well . . . it's a juried show where the entrants use mudcloth in some way: sculpture, mixed media, quilt, clothing, purse, hat, whatever.
But what is mudcloth? It is tightly-woven thin strips of fabric that is hand-painted with stunning and meaningful African patterns.
Check this website out to get a better feel for what mudcloth is and how you can make some yourself: http://www.mnh.si.edu/africanvoices/mudcloth/index_flash.html. Or just come to the Kuumba show and see for yourself and learn what some typical Adinkra symbols mean. The Mudcloth Madness show is open every Thursday through Saturday from noon to 6 PM, as well as at a special showing on Second Saturday Art Walk from 6-9 PM. Location: Kuumba Collective Art Gallery, 1001 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, California. Call 916-613-0099 for more information.

Sculpture Show at High Hand Nursery Oct 1-Nov 7th
I am so excited to have three very large sculptures at the first ArtStock art exhibit sponsored by the Valley Sculpture Artists organization at the High Hand Gallery in Loomis CA. Here are some snippets of my special 3D works.
There are several opportunities to see the show, in addition to the normal 10-4 PM Tuesday through Saturday gallery hours:
 * Oct 3rd (Sunday) 1-3 PM. Opening show with Harpist Beverly Westner-Hoehn * Oct 16th (Saturday) 3-7 PM Art reception. I'll see you there. * Oct 22nd (Friday) 4-7 PM Awards presentation with djideridoo musician David Blonski. NOTE: The most beautiful nursery in the Sacramento area is on this property, as well as an excellent "Cafe" in a huge glass greenhouse. Truly, you will be amazed by the breadth of plants in tasteful and dramatic design settings, water features, hundreds and hundreds of pots and everything you might need for your landscaping needs. The Nursery is right next to the Gallery. If you are like me, you will end up spending many happy hours touring the phenomenal High Hand property.

"Bold Expressions" Can Light Up Your Life 2!
It has been many years since I have entered an art competition at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center (SFAC) and I am happy to report that my "You Light Up My Life 2" was juried into the show. Here is a glimpse of this 7.5 foot tall freestanding indoor-outdoor sculpture that lights up the night. Made from clay tiles, clay pieces and colorful glass baubles which project the light within, this unique sculpture is great for the garden or inside the house or office. The SFAC is open 11 to 3 PM every Tuesday through Saturday with a special viewing during Second Saturday Art Walk on October 9th from 5:30-8:30 PM. Location: 3350-B Gibbons, Carmichael, CA, 95608.

Take the Nature Cure during Breast Cancer Awareness Month
After a hectic, hectic first half of 2010 preparing for my "Legacy" art show in July, other art venues, creating a metal studio, and learning how to make half a dozen Amazon-sized garden sculptures, I just sat back and realized that I've taken four vacations in the last three months!
And what an improvement that has made in my spirit and emotional well-being! During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we explore different ways to renew our spirit by taking the Nature Cure. Read more about the Cure in my Survivor Art Blog. A
And if you are interested, I have created dozens of hand-sculpted hand-painted breast cancer survivor pendant necklaces that recognize the pain of cancer but celebrate the beauty within. They make thoughtful gifts for the person going through chemo or living with the disease.
