KANIKA MARSHALL  -  March 2010
Infusing tribal colors with exotic clay sculptures, textiles, glass, leather, stone & metal

 Greetings!

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

The words of Maya Angelo should resonate with all women, this month especially.  March is Women's History Month. A celebration of the fairer sex. Strong women, patient, assertive, nurturing, glamorous, wise women ALL!  Lots of great things are happening this month in the art world to celebrate our mothers, sisters, daughters, and wives . . .

                                                    Enjoy Your Blessings,
                                                                          Kanika Marshall

Divas Unite On March 6th in Oakland!

Diva Show at 57th Street Gallery1

On Saturday, March 6, 2010 the 57th Street Fine Art Gallery will be hosting its monthly exhibit "DIVA's:  Art Work of Women by Women" from 2:00pm-7:00pm.

I will give a short talk that afternoon about the inspiration for my work, techniques, etc.  And there will be performances by other visual artists.

It's a perfect opportunity to see and buy art, be moved by poetry, groove to music, and meet the artists in downtown Oakland.

This exhibit will be on display the whole month of March 2010 (hours Tuesday through Saturday, 10-5 PM, 5701 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, 94609).

Kanika's Warrior Divas at my March Featured Artist Show

Warrior Diva 355Warrior Diva 584For 20 years, I have wanted to create a series of warriors. African warriors. Seven feet tall. Majestic. Fierce. Beautiful. Surprisingly, my Warrior series "was" born during the last three weeks, but it is different from what I originally envisioned. Yes, tall, beautiful, strong. But they are female . . . with bling!  Warrior Divas!

Warrior Divas - for Truth, Justice and the Feminine Way!  More detail and pictures are on my blog and website. But most importantly, the Divas will make an appearance for the month of March at the Kuumba Collective Art Gallery, at 1001 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, 95815. Normally the gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 6 PM.

But there will also be an Artist Reception on Second Saturday, March 13th, from 3-10 PM and see them yourself.  I would love to chat with you!  A portion of all sales will go to the Kuumba Collective to help them continue their great works in bringing African American history, art, poetry, dance, and music to the Sacramento community.

I will have about 60 sculptures in the show, ranging from $15 to $2,000 - something for everyone!
