KANIKA MARSHALL - February 2010
Infusing tribal colors with exotic clay sculptures, textiles, glass, leather, stone & metal
|
Greetings!
February brings a month of hope and love. "Hope" as expressed by the Black History Month recognition of contributions that Black Americans have made to this country. "Love" as expressed by the romantic sentiments of Valentine's Day. Both of those sentiments are covered in this newsletter and I hope you will join in the fun with me this month.
Enjoy Your Blessings, Kanika Marshall

For Your Special Valentine
I have been busy for many weeks making colorful new heart sculptures for your special valentine. I have applied interesting textures and vivid colors to these hand-carved, one-of-a-kind clay hearts. They are twined with gold and copper wire and sometimes beads so they may be easily and beautifully displayed.
You may purchase these lovely hearts for $20 to $35 as original gifts from four locations right now: Jacquelyn's Salon, 2475 Elk Grove Blvd., Suite 120,
95758
Sunlight of the Spirit, 2314 J Street, Sacramento, 95816 Pinky's Salon, 5379 H Street, Sacramento, 95819
Pottery and Hearts Page from Kanika's Website How are the hearts made? Lots of steps. Lots of fun as shown on my blog post. |
Celebrate Black History Month and Make a Mask with Kanika on February 20th
Some of my traditional and contemporary
African mask sculptures will be displayed at this free event at the Elk Grove Library. I will also bring several three-dimensional sculptures, some tile "quilts" and other mixed-media sculptures, as well as books of Africans and African sculptures for your viewing pleasure.
My clay sculptures are hand
carved out of clay, painted with a color glaze, and fired twice in a
kiln to 1,860 degrees. Many of the sculptures are specially draped with
authentic African fabrics or adorned with stones, beadwork, leather, jute, or shells. I believe my African ancestors work through my fingers to create each one-of-a-kind sculpture.
Discover the art of mask making. I will demonstrate how you can make and carve your own small mask pendant (one mask per person please).
Where: Elk Grove Library Community Room 8900 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove, CA, 95624 Saturday, February 20, 2010 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
