KANIKA MARSHALL, www.kanika.us, Jan 2010 Infusing tribal colors with exotic clay sculptures, textiles, glass, leather, stone & metal |
Greetings!
Happy New Year! Are you as
excited as I am about the rosy prospects for the new year? My "Treasure Map" for 2010 is a visual
portrayal of the types of things I want to have for myself in the upcoming
year. It includes physical and
emotional fitness, participating in more outdoor activities, learning to be
lazier (smile), and having more fun with my art. This first newsletter of the new year starts that process.
Enjoy Your Blessings, Kanika Marshall

I have two addictions: chocolate and fabric. Chocolate
because it's yummy (a staple food really) and fabric because it has a textural
quality of color, design, and feel.
That's why I am so jazzed to be participating in a
brand new art show at the Blue Moon Gallery this month that celebrates
TEXTURE. Come and check us out
this Saturday, 1/9/10, from 6-9 PM, at 2353 Albatross Way, just off El Camino and Business 80. Here's a new video of the gallery.
I'll have my six
foot tall "Layers of Life", "Faces of a Goddess", "Renewed at 40", and "Energy Flow" texture-filled sculptures in the show. But you can also pick out some colorful platters,
hearts, large tile sculptures, and a water feature and other outdoor art.
Live music, wine, food, and wonderful art. How better to
spend a Saturday night? The show
runs through Feb 6th, Wednesdays through Saturdays, from noon to 5 PM.

A brand new hair salon has opened its doors in Elk Grove and
it is full of color: Jacquelyn's Family Salon, 2475 Elk Grove Blvd., Suite 120,
95758. I took some of my most
colorful two-dimensional sculptures there to add to Jackie's personal flair.
Jacquelyn's has professionals who specialize in all types of
hair (including black and multicultural hair) as well as all hair styles, as
described in this article.
My
sculptures will be there until March, including some really neat sculptures for Valentine's Day.

It's All About Identity
The Kuumba Collective is a fabulous new gallery at 1001 Del
Paso Blvd., comprised of several local African American artists.
Stop by for a cup of Iris Tea Garden
tea and choose from Iris' wide selection of all things tea, including tea, tea
pots, and her own pottery designs.
Marshall Dean Bailey offers a large collection of African-inspired beaded
mud cloth wall hangings, jewelry, all-purpose cards, and thought-provoking
plaques. Daphne Burgess awes you
with her amazing paintings and clay sculptures. Shakiri's bold paintings and talking sticks are conversation pieces. Dr. Francione's colorful paintings call to Spirit.
I have a few sculptures there now, and I will be the Featured Artist in March.

| It's All About Growth
Many of my hearts and Spirit Dolls are in Sunlight of the Spirit, 2314 J Street, Sacramento, CA, 95816.
Sunlight of the Spirit seeks to inspire, encourage, and celebrate those desiring to grow in recovery, in faith, and in spiritual connection with others. Their vision is that those who seek recovery from addiction or desire to grow spiritually will find the resources and support they need to live in the 'sunlight of the spirit'.

It's All About Home
You have probably heard me rave about my kitchen remodel project that is
nearing completion. My blog has
the latest information about the fabulous lighting that my brother installed in
the kitchen last week and the last big step, which is to create Kanika-style
tiles for a customized backsplash throughout the kitchen. Each tile has been fired two or three
times to get a depth of color. Soon I'll be able to put them in place!
