KANIKA MARSHALL Bringing Some Exotica to Your Life September 2009 |
Greetings!
I'm so excited! There are so many wonderful events going on this month. First, the "Bra Show" will be on display from September 10-19, with an art auction on September 12th. Wait until you see the art entries for this fundraiser for breast cancer research. Amazing!
On September 26th, "The Words of Truth and Art" will be explored at the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum in Sacramento, California, and I am honored to be their featured artist for a month!
Also in September, Side Show Studios will celebrate their third-year anniversary. Need a tattoo?
And finally, can a clay sculptor be a plein air artist? Yep, I think so. What do you think?
Enjoy these last days of summer and . . . enjoy your blessings . . .

sculptures in their gallery on September 26th from 11 AM to 7 PM,and from 11 AM to 4 PM on weekdays, through October 24th. The Center is located at 2251 Florin Road in South Sacramento.
The Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum celebrated its first annual Sojo Community Fine Arts festival in 2003. For 6 years, this festival has increased community awareness of historical and cultural values of visual art through cultural programs, entertainment, art and food, Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art museums goal is to engage, cultivate and educate diverse audiences about the arts. The event also enhances the community's knowledge of art in a fun and positive environment. People of diverse ages and backgrounds' attending the event offers an excellent vehicle for leading businesses to showcase their support for the South Sacramento community and the Arts. Each year, STMAC features an empowering theme that embodies the legacy of the great historical leader and abolitionist Sojourner Truth. Not only did she fight for the abolition of slavery, she also fought for women's rights. Sojourner Truth, is the first historical black woman to be officially honored by the government. This year, the theme is "Words Of Truth" -A celebration of the nourishment, commitment, and self-worth of strong women.
Please bring your whole family to the free event on September 26th. There are fun art projects for kids, music, dance, art vendors, food vendors, and the phenomenal historical murals on the walls of the center.

Can a Clay Sculptor be a Plein Air Artist?
A plein art artist is generally one who creates her/his artwork on-site in order to capture the moment at that location; for example, a painter who paints a sunset while they are watching the sun setting at the ocean. The piece is generally finished on-location.
Often when on vacation, I take 25-pound bags of clay with me to sculpt what I see on-location. My "Meditations in Mendocino" and "Snow" series (at right) are examples of those forays.
This year, I went back to Mendocino with 50 pounds of clay and created a new "Nature" series. Read more about the process on my 8/29/09 blog and see some of the finished pieces on my website.
So do I qualify as a plein art artist? I think so. What about you?
