Greetings!
WHEW! It sure was warm in September! The older I get, the more my joints appreciate the warm weather. But I am looking forward to the beautiful fall colors, the wine crush activities at many of our local wineries, and a slower art pace. Slower art pace? Who am I kidding?
This month, I will be the featured sculpture artist at the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center on October 10th, have a couple of sculptures in the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Celebration on October 11th, be included in the prestigious Smithsonion Traveling "Freedom's Sisters Show" from October 25th through January 4th, and I have sculptures in three businesses in Elk Grove.
All of those very exciting art happenings are included in this edition of Kanika's Artscapes and I hope you enjoy reading about them.
See the end of the newsletter for our raffle on October 10th.

Featured Artists at the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center
I am delighted to be the featured artist at the new Elk Grove Artist Fine Arts Center (EGFAC), along with fantasy jeweler Julie Dixon-Quattrin. The EGFAC's "Second Friday" takes place on October 10th from 5:30 to 9:00 PM and is located at 9701 Elk Grove-Florin Road, just south of Elk Grove Blvd. My show is called "A New Groove" and will reveal new sculptures created or renovated since May 2008. I have been experimenting with outdoor sculptures this summer and some will be in the show. Please come to the show and give your feedback. All attendees will be able to enter a raffle for a Kanika African Sculptures gift certificate. COME FOR THE FOOD, FUN, AND FINE ART!

"Freedom's Sisters" Show Comes to Sacramento!
Freedom's Sistersis the first and most comprehensive traveling exhibit on women in the Civil Rights movement, focusing on the lives and contributions of 20 African American women, from key 19th century historical figures to contemporary leaders who have fought for equality for people of color. Visitors of all ages and backgrounds will be moved and inspired by the stories of the women celebrated in this interactive exhibit. Created by Cincinnati Museum Center, in collaboration with The Ford Motor Company Fund, and Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), Freedom's Sisters made its world premiere at Museum Center, and has now embarked on a three-year, nationwide tour.
I am so proud to be one of the following local African American female artists who will present our artwork along with this amazing Freedom's Sisters show, from October 25th through January 9th, at the Sacramento Public Library, 915 I Street: Kanika Marshall, Sharaine Bell, Monica Crook, Sumatra Kirkland, Norma Lamb, Shonna McDaniels, Deborah Pittman, Corrine Singleton, Constance Terrell, and Orlanda Uffre.
My Spirituality and Art Blog has more information and videos regarding this show and my Survivor Art Blog shows another interesting, heretofore unseen sculpture that will be in the show.

KVIE Art Auction A Huge Success!
The annual KVIE Art Auction was a big success, airing 250 pieces of fine art from September 26th-28th. To those of you who bidded on my "World Beauties" tile mosaic, thank you for creating an EXCITING half hour of TV on September 27th!
Was I ever nervous all day! Thankfully, my new friend, Martha, and another unnamed person had placed pre-bids on my sculpture at the KVIE reception on September 22nd, so I knew there were at least two minimum bids on the $600 retail piece. But what if nobody else bid? I really wanted the KVIE public television station to get as much money as possible to keep their great programming on air (although I did also want Martha to get a good buy on the sculpture).
At the end of the short bidding period, "World Beauties" was a "Bell Ringer" with four callers vying over the final bid, which well exceeded my asking price.
How fun!
