Greetings!
Put on your walking shoes and get ready to experience something that has never happened before! On August 16th and 17th, the first ever Open Studio Tour will take place in the City of Elk Grove. Several artists will open our studios to the community and share the love we all have for art.
This is a month for "firsts" as you will read in this newsletter. I hope you enjoy this edition of Kanika's Artscapes. Please let me know if there are specific topics you would like me to cover next month.

A First for Elk Grove, California
For the first time ever, on August 16th and 17th, from 10 AM to 5 PM, several Elk Grove artists will be opening our studios to art lovers. You may not only purchase our work but also see where and how we make our art. So if you have ever wanted to see how beaded jewelry is made, or how a watercolor or oil painting is created, or see what equipment is used to make clay sculptures, or learn about pastel drawing, or look at a photographer's tools, or find out what iris folding is, or talk with an artist about their inspiration for art, this is the event for you! Several artists will be holding demonstrations or have works in progress during the tour. At my studio (#1 on the map), my Kanika African Sculptures and Michael Fitzwater Photography will be outside in the garden. Mary Marshall Watercolors will be in the garden annex. I will be offering 20% off all of my sculptures and will have a free raffle for a brand new art piece (see "A first for Home Decor" below). Be ready to have a great time! For more information about the artists and a map of the studios, go to my website's Open Studio page.

A First for Kanika
I was honored to have been selected to judge the California State Fair Youth Sculpture Competition this year. What an amazing experience! Ten times larger than any other competition that I had thus far judged. What talented youth!
Read on my blog ("Creativity Starts Young") why the experience reminded me of the "Raider's of the Lost Ark" movie.

A First for Layers of Life
Over
the last few months, I described how my new monolith, Layers of Life,
was created. I am happy to say that it won an Award of Excellence at
the 2008 California State Fair. So if you get a chance, stop by the
Fine Art Show in Exhibit Hall #7, and check it out. More detailed information on the making of this sculpture is available in my Art of Breast Cancer Blog and the In the Studio page on my website.

A First for Kanika's Home Decor Line
I love unique, one-of-a-kind items. As such, my home decor line of sculptures includes incense burners, vases, goddess alters/candles, and wall pockets and wall sconces that can hold water for fresh-cut flowers. Recently, one of my dearest customers had asked me to make her some customized electric switch plate covers from grout, jewelry, mirrors, and stones. But I could not create anything that met my standards. I thought the concept was awesome, though, so after much thinking, it dawned on me how to do it "Kanika style." That means it's asymmetrical and sculptural, uses unique colors, and is functional. On August 1st, I opened the kiln holding the first trial of my new swtich plate treasures. What a huge success! I will be unveiling these home décor items at the open studio show in August. And one lucky participant will get a free switch plate from the raffle I will be holding that weekend! The image at the left is a sneak peek of part of one of the switch plates. If you cannot attend the open house, but want to be included in the raffle, just e-mail me your name, telephone number, and snail mailing address, and I will add your entry to the raffle.

A First at Throwing BIG!!!
 Although
I have a potter's wheel, and have taken three separate pottery classes
at Sac State and Cosumnes River College, pottery has never been my
forte. Hence, the concentration on three-dimensional and slab pieces.
But earlier this year, I took some private wheel-throwing classes from
local clay phenom, Chris Estratis. My goal was to "throw big" - at
least bigger than my previous 12" maximum height. So . . . I was happy
to produce this 24" piece.
But I don't know what to call her! Do you have any ideas? She will be on display at the open studio show. |
