GREETINGS FROM NORTHERN N.H.!
It's hard to believe isn't it, that summer's nearly over. It's been a great one for us up here, as most years it seems like it could get unexpectedly cold at any moment, but not this year. It's been warm, and even a little humid lately, but that's okay ... we know what mother nature will bring us in a matter of months, so we enjoy these days of summer for as long as they come along.
While autumn may technically begin on September 21, it starts a bit earlier in the north country - with the kids going back to school soon, night time temps dipping in to that "chilly" range, and leaves sure to begin their transformation at any moment. Is it peace and quiet or energized trout and salmon that you crave? Perhaps it's the blazing foliage that you want to catch later in the month, but whatever it is, September is a nice time to be here regardless of your motives. Remember that fishing season goes until October 15, upland bird hunting season begins October 1, not to mention the endless hiking and paddling opportunities around town, so fall at Tall Timber will be outstanding.  | | 8/20: CT River brown trout |
The fishing on the Connecticut River and Back Lake have been a little slow as of late, but that should change pretty soon. Once those night time temps start falling in September, it should help "turn on" the brookies, browns and rainbows of Back Lake. Patterns on top like hornbergs and the golden demon should once again do the trick. The Connecticut River usually hits another gear in September when the dam flows are increased to lower the Connecticut Lakes for winter levels. The increase in water brings larger lake fish in to the river, particularly salmon, and this can mean some of the best fishing of the year. Streamers are great at this time (ghosts, soft hackle streamers, etc.), but we all know that prepared anglers bring everything out there, so don't forget your dries and nymphs when you go!  "Midweek Snowmobile Escape" Package New for 2013
Many of our guests have requested a winter package that combines cozy accommodations and great meals at the Rainbow Grille, with the freedom of renting snowmobiles to explore the extensive Pittsburg Ridge Runners snowmobile trail system. We came up with our "Midweek Snowmobile Escape" Package to help our guests that don't get up here very often in winter experience the beauty of an old fashioned winter in northern NH. This year's package will be offered Sunday thru Thursday each week in January and March, excluding the Sunday of the Martin Luther King holiday.
The "Midweek Snowmobile Escape" Package is for two night midweek stays only, and includes a full day of snowmobile rentals (two single snowmobiles or one double), two breakfasts for two and two dinners for two at the award winning Rainbow Grille. Coos County in general, and Pittsburg in particular, have historically yielded some of the largest whitetail deer in New Hampshire. This season should be no different, as our mild winter seems to have had a good effect on our resident deer population - we've been seeing lots of them around town this summer.

The "Old Girl" Celebrates
While Queen Elizabeth got all the press with her diamond jubilee this summer, our eldest mascot Greta also celebrated a milestone birthday as well - 10. Greta doesn't get around like she used to, but she still can kick it in to a higher gear when needed (i.e. feeding time).
She managed to point a few grouse and woodcock in limited time in the woods last year, and we hope to get her out there this fall.
After all, she still needs to show the boys
(Rudy and Monty) how it's done!
