May 2, 2011
Dear Friends,

We are thrilled to announce that we received a $1200 grant from the Reno Rodeo Foundation to support our 2011 programs!

The Reno Rodeo Foundation provided us with funds to purchase new Reno Rodeo Foundation Logohelmets, a double-sided, free standing chalkboard and to make the graduation day parties for the kids a special event celebrating their successes!

The Reno Rodeo Foundation has a special request of us this year and of all our supporters and we want you to help us with this request. It's quick and easy:

1. Log in to your Facebook Account
2. Find the Reno Rodeo's page (just type Reno Rodeo in the search box)
3. Click their Like button!

Their goal is to get to 10,000 "likes" on Facebook before the Reno Rodeo starts this year!

And while you are there -- leave them a thank you message from you as a supporter of Horses for the Spirit! I'd like to see Horses for the Spirit folks thank them more than anyone else! They deserve thanks not just for how they support us, but for all they do in the community... and they do a lot!

Sincerely,
Deb Conrad
Executive Director
THANK YOU FOR YOUR RECENT SUPPORT!

Donation in Memory of Patty Atkinson
Horses for the Spirit gratefully acknowledges the $189 donation made in memory of Patty Atkinson whose obituary read, "She always had an open door policy to kids and friends in need. She invited many less fortunate friends of her daughters to live with them until they were ready to move forward on their own."

Colleagues of Amy Vieira, Patty's daughter, who works at the Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space department, put together this contribution stating that they believe our organization was the appropriate choice to honor Patty Atkinson and her lifelong support of those in need.

1st Annual Spring Phling and Fun-draiser at the Snake Ranch - Benefiting Horses for the Spirit
Horses for the Spirit also gratefully acknowledges Suzy Anderson and Don Engelsman for benefiting Horses for the Spirit with their Spring Phling event. Their event raised $120! Thanks to all the attendees who made the event a success!

SPRING PROGRAMS HAVE BEGUN!

Along with the Reno Rodeo Foundation, we want to thank the JUNIOR LEAGUE OF RENO  and the Stollmeyer Family Fund for providing vital financial support!

Wednesday Program - Equine Assisted Learning/Activities-Based Model
Running now through June 1st. 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Jeane Spada-Allgood, who is new in our volunteer ranks shares this about the first session:

What a great group of kids we have for the Wednesday sessions this spring! I have the pleasure of volunteering for the Wednesday program offered with No Child Left Behind Behavioral Healthcare Services (NCLB).  I am delighted to finally be able to work directly with the kids and horses - although I must say, I was a little hesitant when I found out the participants this spring are six and seven years old! But my worries were groundless, as the kids are wonderful. Read more...

Saturday Program - Equine Assisted Learning/Natural Horsemanship-Based Model
Running now through June 18th, 10 am to noon

The Saturday program is being held at a new facility for us in Spanish NCLB Kids Wait for Program to BeginSprings and it provides a rustic and beautiful setting for the program.

Saturday, April 30th was the first session for this 8-week program and the kids enjoyed watching the volunteers bringing in the horses off the pasture before sitting down on the porch to participate in the classroom portion of the class. They anxiously awaited the opportunity to get out with the horses.

If you'd like to observe a program, please contact Deb Conrad to schedule a time.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS NEEDED FOR WINE & SPIRITS 2011

Horses for the Spirit is looking for folks to assist us with our 2011 Wine & Spirits fundraiser which is scheduled for November 3rd at the Silver Legacy.

We need help with everything from planning, to securing raffle/auction items, to finding an enthusiastic and charismatic emcee and working the event.

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we want to make our 3rd Annual Wine & Spirits event the best one yet!

Please contact Deb Conrad if you would like to help make this event a success!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: SUZY ANDERSON Suzy Anderson and her horse Amy

The first time I met Suzy, she came out to help paint the arena railings with us and I recall her talking about how she would love to bring her big Percheron mare out to meet the kids sometime.  I am not sure she knew at the time just how involved she and her mare Amy would get in the programs and the organization!
