HORSES FOR THE SPIRIT NEWS

Summer may not be a busy time as far as programs go, but Horses for the Spirit's team of volunteers has been busy with the many other tasks of keeping our growing organization moving forward! We owe many thanks to all who continually work on behalf of our organization and the kids in our community.

DEMO AND FUNDRAISER IN THE WORKS!

On Thursday, September 17th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm we'll be hosting a demonstration about what Horses for the Spirit does at Avalon Friesians in South Reno. For those of you who haven't seen us in action, please plan to join us for this event! More details to come as the event nears.

Then in November we'll be hosting our first ever "real" fundraiser. Thanks to Susan Lohse and Reece Flaherty for giving their time and expertise to Horses for the Spirit to organize this event for us. We're planning a wine tasting and raffle. More details forthcoming!

We're really excited about the prospect of hosting a fun event to help raise money to enable kids in our community to benefit from our programs.

If you are interested in donating a gift or gift certificate for our raffle or would like to help us with this fundraiser, please contact Deb Conrad at deb@horsesforthespirit.org or call 775.224.5999.

COME BY AND SAY HI!

WESTERN STATES WILD HORSE AND BURRO EXPO Western States Wild Horse & Burro Expo Poster
Friday-Sunday, August 21-23, 2009 at the Reno Livestock Events Center, Reno

The Wild Horse & Burro Expo is an annual event that offers folks in our area a chance to see mustangs in action, watch some great clinicians, shopping galore and a chance to adopt a prison-trained mustang too. For more information, visit www.wildhorseandburroexpo.com.

We'll be at our booth all 3 days -- don't forget to come visit us while you are there!

We do still need some volunteers to sign up for this event. If you enjoy meeting the public and are confident about talking about what we do, please sign up for a shift if you are able.

We'll try to keep the shifts to 4 hours or less each day, so the more folks available to help with us with this event, the shorter we can make the shifts.

If you can take a shift on one or more of the days, please RSVP to Deb Conrad at deb@horsesforthespirit.org as soon as possible with your name, cell # and availability.

Horses for the Spirit in the Reno Rodeo ParadeRENO RODEO PARADE & RENO RODEO "STAND UP & BE RECOGNIZED" NIGHT - THANK YOU!
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Reno Rodeo Parade and the Sunday evening "Stand Up and Be Recognized" night at the rodeo. Both events were well attended by our volunteers and supporters who helped us make a good public appearance on behalf of HFTS and also in support of the Reno Rodeo and its foundation -- it is amazing what they do for our community!

We also want to thank Circus Circus for allowing us to park our rigs in their secure parking lot. The convenience and security of this arrangement allowed us to focus on the task at hand -- getting all of our horse and humans ready for the parade!

Here's how the Rodeo Foundation wrapped up the parade in its recent newsletter:
The Reno Rodeo Parade was resplendent with colorful floats, beautiful horses and enthusiastic participants to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Reno Rodeo.

New to the parade this year were several recipients of grants from the Reno Rodeo Foundation.  Thank you to the following organizations who enjoyed a beautiful Saturday morning with us - right up until the rain came out of nowhere!

Sparks Rotary - Kid's Free Fishing Day
Kid's Kottage
Food Bank of Northern Nevada
Kids and Horses
Horses for the Spirit
Veteran's Guest House
Nevada State High School Rodeo Association
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Eagle Valley Children's Home
Safe N Sober Foundation
Angel Kiss
Step 2

There are two groups I want to recognize in particular as their floats were absolutely over-the-top tremendous.  The first is the Sparks Rotary with their float representing their "Kid's Free Fishing Day" event.  It was perfectly appointed and even had live music!  The second is the Kid's Kottage - which was made entirely by children and teens who are in protective custody. The Kid's Kottage float was a thank you for the "Wildest, Richest Donation in the West" and was a colorful rendition of the Kid's Kampus Activity Center.  The residents of the Kid's Kottage rode on the float and according to the staff at the Kottage, most had never even been to a parade, let alone been in a parade.  They were reportedly so excited they couldn't sleep the night before and after the parade they raved about the experience for several days. To everyone who participated or attended as a spectator - thank you!

otis and blue playing No. 2ART PAWS IN THE PARK 2009
We had a great time at the Art Paws in the Park event hosted by PetFolio Magazine. The grassy grounds in front of the McKinley Arts Center were filled with booths for animal-related vendors and the attendance this year was great! We nearly filled up one whole sheet with folks interested in volunteering for us -- that is a fantastic response for an event like this. According the Michelle McHardy, managing editor of PetFolio, the event raised $4000 to donate to the reader's choice winners.

The highlight of our day was Otis, one of the HFTS mustangs, playing with Nevada Blue, one of the Wild Horse & Burro Expo mustangs. Blue had been working all day on pulling up a root and when he finally got it out, he taunted Otis into a game of "tug-o-war. It was pretty funny to watch!

OFF TO PAGOSA SPRINGS

Robbie Maus and her mustang BellaThis year Robbie Maus, co-founder, program director and "woman of many other hats" in our organization got the opportunity to attend the Parelli Center in Pagosa Springs for a month.

She embarked on this adventure with her mustang mare, Bella, on July 23rd after months and months of working hard in her business as a hair stylist, scrimping and saving to allow herself to attend the training and make ends meet while she's gone.

It is this personal dedication to her horsemanship and her professional development that makes her so good at what she does. We'll miss her while she's gone, but we're sure she'll bring back many new tools and approaches that Horses for the Spirit can use to continue to improve our programs.
FALL PROGRAMS

We are currently in the planning stages for our fall program(s). We are likely to start our next session at the end of September or early in October. Stay tuned for more details.
We hope you've enjoyed this newsletter and encourage you to send it to friends, family and colleagues who might be interested in Horses for the Spirit. Please send us an email if you have any trouble viewing this newsletter or if you have questions or comments.

Sincerely,

THANK YOU!
We couldn't do what we do without support from foundations and individuals in our community. We are grateful for the support and know that the kids who have been able to participate in our programs because of your financial support are very thankful too!
