DEAR FRIENDS:
We're heading into the last third of 2008. This year has flown by! We've accomplished quite a bit since the beginning of the year (see below for story). We plan to accomplish a lot more before the end of the year and we need your help to do it!
PROVIDE A SCHOLARSHIP FOR A TEEN IN OUR COMMUNITY - MAKE YOUR DONATION NOW
To serve teens in our area we continually seek funding through grants and community support. We received generous support from the Kidview grant in 2007, but we still need your support.
Every dollar helps make a difference in the lives of teens in our community.

2008 IN REVIEW
In August of 2007, we received a generous grant from Kidview, Inc and we recently submitted our interim report to the Kidview committee.
Writing the report clarified for us some of what we've accomplished since then.
We:
- implemented two 10-week programs with the McGee Center and HUHFY;
- implemented one five-week program with Washoe County School District (WCSD);
- conducted four one-day events with Tahoe Children's Cabinet, the Methodist Church, the Brownies and Tahoe Women's Services;
- presented to Social Services and are negotiating a system of assisting the counselors within Social Services;
- subcontracted with a ranch manager to live on the property;
- upgraded the classroom with furniture, rugs and paint and had the electrical wiring repaired;
- purchased and erected a corral and four run-in sheds to add a safe and comfortable place for the equine teachers to stay;
- improved the arena where the kids work with the horses by making it more secure with wood railings;
- received press coverage by the Reno Gazette-Journal on August 9, 2008
- were interviewed by Parelli magazine staff for inclusion in an upcoming issue of Savvy Times;
-
can report that 100% of the students polled stated that they learned something new about themselves by participating in the program and 100% of the students polled stated that they learned something that would help them in future personal relationships.
We are excited about what we've done and are looking forward to what is ahead of us even more!
Special thanks to Kidview, Inc. for supporting our programs through a $15,000 grant and to Tony & Margaret Ciorciari for donating substantial financial assistance for the purchase of fencing.

RESEARCH PROJECT ASSISTANCE
- Do you want to learn more about Equine Assisted Learning?
- Do you like to delve into websites and find out what information is there?
- Do you have a few hours to devote to a project to help Horses for the Spirit?
If so, we need you!
We have a membership to a site devoted to "the business" of Equine Assisted Learning and none of us on the board have had time to explore what is there. We need a go-getter who'll search through the site looking for useful information for us. You'll work with Deb Conrad on the project if you are interested. Email deb@horsesforthespirit.org or call 224-5999.
POLICIES & PROCEDURES TEAM
- Do you have human resources experience?
- Do you enjoy reviewing and creating policies and procedures?
- Do you like to think about the "what ifs" in life and help create ways to handle them?
- Do you have some time you'd like to devote to Horses for the Spirit to make a positive impact for our organization?
If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, you might be just the person we're looking for! Consider becoming joining our team. This is an immensely important job and necessary to our continued success. Contact us to find out more.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
"THE HIGH SCHOOL GIVING CIRCLE"
As a recipient of the Community Foundation of Western Nevada's Kidview grant, Horses for the Spirit has been asked to help promote a really great program they are offering this fall. If you know of a teen who would be great for this program, please make sure they know about this fantastic opportunity!
Here's the scoop:
Program Name: The High School Giving Circle
Purpose: Up to 12 high school-aged kids learn about philanthropy and make grants in our community for projects that interest them. They convene for 1 hour per week over a 9- to 10-week period with a facilitator. They learn about philanthropy, about nonprofits in the area, about working as a team, about voicing their interests in terms of giving, and about making group decisions. Together the group gives away $10,000 in grants to qualified nonprofits.
Cost to Participate: There is no cost to students or their families. This program is fully funded by a donor at the Foundation because of the donor's commitment to philanthropy and the desire to teach philanthropy to younger generations.
Program Start Date: September 24
Application Deadline: September 10
Contact for More Info or Application: Tracy Peterson Turner, Ph.D. Program Officer, Community Foundation of Western Nevada, Phone: 775-333-5499, Email:tturner@cfwnv.org

THANK YOU WILD HORSE & BURRO EXPO VOLUNTEERS!
We wanted to thank all of the volunteers who made it possible for Horses for the Spirit to have a booth at the Wild Horse & Burro Expo. Even the girls of the McGee Center helped us out on Friday!
The effort was well worth it -- we met many new folks who are interested in what we're doing and some who want to become volunteers as well!
Horses for the Spirit wouldn't be able to do what it does without the hours of assistance from our volunteers, so we thank you... whether you work a booth, help us paint arena rails, work directly with the kids or help us make phone calls, we are extremely grateful for your service to us and the community! |
HORSES FOR THE SPIRIT MERCHANDISE
Help us raise money and buy yourself some nifty Horses for the Spirit shirts, bags, hats, buttons or baby gear! All profits from purchases go to support Horses for the Spirit.
