CASTELLO ROMITORIO - $24 - Rated 92 Points Last week Halloween Parties and weather prevented many people from trying one of the best wines we have had in a long time - we will have it open again this Friday. But when its gone - it is gone. This wine caused a buzz from the moment it was delivered. You just have to try it. Castello Romitorio is a massive twelfth-century hilltop fortress in Montalcino. After acquiring the estate in 1984, artist Sandro Chia spent the next several years restoring Castello Romitorio and transforming its lands into vineyards, constructing a cellar on the castle's ground floor with the most advanced equipment on the market, and enlisting the expertise of one of country's leading oenologists. Sandro Chia's first wine, "Romito del Romitorio" was bottled in 1984 and proved exceptional from the start, thanks largely to the Chia's passion. In twenty years of winemaking, the Chia family's winemaking philosophy has evolved into a strict adherence to the pursuit of excellence at any cost and an absolute belief in quality over quantity. Sandro Chia sees the key to the greatness of these wines in the irresistible impulse toward artistic perfection: "I make wine with the same passion with which I paint-it is devotion, a sacrifice, that ultimately brings the greatest reward." WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS "The pearl of Castello Romitorio's production has arrived. The vineyards are cultivated in generous soil situated at the bottom of an ancient Etruscan village called "Ghiaccioforte." The grapes utilized in the Morellino are a blend of Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Syrah. A nose of fresh fruits, with distinct notes of plum. This is a 5 star vintage." Vranken Champagne Demoiselle - $59 After you appreciate the beauty of the packaging, the first thing you notice about Demoiselle is the subtle aroma, and green and citrus flavors of this tasty champagne. While the fruity, full flavor is noticeable, the champagne retains its dry character.
It's not a drink to be tossed down during a toast, but rather savored as an apertif. Named for the dragonflies on the river near the Chateau in France, this affordable bottle will be a welcomed gift for your hostess.
This comes from the renowned Champagne House of Vranken. Never heard of them? They are the largest sellers of Champagne in France. When people order Champagne in France - this is what they are drinking.
Unlike most champagnes, it's made with 80% chardonnay, giving it a more subtle, softer, feminine character.
Beautifully subtle and worthy of savoring - forget everything you thought you knew about Champagne - you must try this one to see why the French prefer this over all the others.
Villa Medoro Chimera - $23 - Rated 91 Points
One of the best whites that we have offered this year. A must have for the Thanksgiving Table. Made from a Trebbiano & Falanghina blend. "A very floral almost Pinot Gris like wine. Showing fine notes of fresh cut grass and Pear Drops. A hint of lemony acidity to ballance and touch of pink pepper to the finish but still very mineral throughout."
There is a tremendous amount of finesse in this bottle. Great body and a silky finish make this a perfect choice for a holiday gift.
Be sure to try it with the cheese we are sampling on Friday - it is a house favorite and we think you will like it too. ALSO IN STOCK From Shafer Vineyards: Shafer Relentless Shafer One Point Five.
