CASTELLO ROMITORIO - $24 - Rated 92 Points
This wine caused a buzz from the moment it was delivered. You just have to try it.
Castello Romitorio is a massive twelfth-century hilltop fortress in Montalcino. After acquiring the estate in 1984, artist Sandro Chia spent the next several years restoring Castello Romitorio and transforming its lands into vineyards, constructing a cellar on the castle's ground floor with the most advanced equipment on the market, and enlisting the expertise of one of country's leading oenologists.
Sandro Chia's first wine, "Romito del Romitorio" was bottled in 1984 and proved exceptional from the start, thanks largely to the Chia's passion. In twenty years of winemaking, the Chia family's winemaking philosophy has evolved into a strict adherence to the pursuit of excellence at any cost and an absolute belief in quality over quantity.
Sandro Chia sees the key to the greatness of these wines in the irresistible impulse toward artistic perfection: "I make wine with the same passion with which I paint-it is devotion, a sacrifice, that ultimately brings the greatest reward."
WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS
"The pearl of Castello Romitorio's production has arrived. The vineyards are cultivated in generous soil situated at the bottom of an ancient Etruscan village called "Ghiaccioforte." The grapes utilized in the Morellino are a blend of Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Syrah. A nose of fresh fruits, with distinct notes of plum. This is a 5 star vintage."
Les Amouriers Chusclan Cotes du Rhone Villages - $16
Domaine des Amouriers is a leading estate in the appellation of Vacqueyras, located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, just south of the region of Gigondas. It is situated upon a plateau of garrigues, a terroir of very poor soils made of red clay & limestone under smooth, rolled stones reminiscent of Châteauneuf.
This poor, rocky land is actually perfectly suited to growing vines, naturally producing lower yields and grapes of great concentration and balance. Four generations have grown grapes here, with the original vineyards being planted in 1928. As is traditional, the wines are fermented and aged in separate tanks. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, the Domaine des Amouriers is a wine of tremendous opulence, viscosity and richness. The elaborate aromas of the wines of the Amouriers are the fruit of a scrupulous selection of the vineyard soils, an individual ageing of each grape variety, a traditional winemaking process; the harmonious tannins have been shaped by an ancestral know-how, the wines blended into a vast array of flavors. With a slight chill in the air this is an excellent choice as winter approaches.
Paisaje Tupungato 2008 - $17 - Rated 91 Points
If you are looking for an excellent example of a New World-style red wine for less than $20, this could be the wine for you. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Merlot, the Paisaje de Tupungato is an impressive Argentine wine, made by a winery that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. WInemaker: "In the glass, it is deep ruby with a hint of some brick coming through. The aromas lift right out of the glass. There's an immediate vanilla oak sweetness, followed by black cherry, plums, red currants, and some cedar. The palate carries forward the same fruits, but with a slight herbal quality, perhaps dill, mocha, and some spiciness." One of the reasons I like this wine so much is that it is very well balanced and integrated. The new oak, while obviously present, does not overwhelm the wine, but rather adds tannins and flavor complexity. The acidity, tannins, and alcohol are well-proportioned and in balance. And the plum and red currant flavors are part of a lasting finish.
BACK IN STOCK Reserve de la Saurine 2010 - $12 When this arrived at the beginning of the month - it lasted for less than a day. It is one of the best examples of an everyday red that we have ever had. We just received two cases - and when it is gone - it's gone.
