AFFORDABLE BURGUNDY??
Vignerons de Buxy Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise Blanc $14
Who can resist affordable Burgundy? This week we introduce two labels from Cave Buxy, entry-level but built with character, depth and classic Burgundian qualities. First, the Chardonnay - fine, pale golden hue with a nose of citrus and huneysuckle, the taste has a lively bite and finish of mineral and spice. The winemaker recommends we pair it with "fish tarts and seafood gratins."
Doesn't that sound tasty? We might just pretend it's warm already and open clams and oysters on the charcoal grill.
Vignerons de Buxy Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise Rouge $14
Now to their Pinot Noir - let's go to the source:
"The grapevines are situated between Buxy and Saint Gengoux le National and are generally grown midway up the hillside. The soil is very shallow and ventilated. The heavily pebbled earth is ideal for the Pinot Noir. With a fine, clean red colour with ruby glints, the nose opens on red fruits which are typical of Pinot Noir (blackcurrant, morello cherry and redcurrant) with hints of smoke, humus and sometimes animal touches."
Uhhh, that last bit we might translate as "a touch of the barn" (not full-on horse, maybe a billy goat). Primo with duck and ham courses, you could actually age this little number too.
Masciarelli Montepulciano d'Abruzzo $12
Gianni Masciarelli established his winery 30 years ago in the tiny village of San Martina sulla Marrucina, situated between Mount Maiella and the Adriatic Sea.
With a reverence for the land and rocky high-altitude soils, Gianni set about producing elegant wines with a sense of place (plus a broad range of olive oils). This Montepulciano is his "quaffable" table wine, unmistakably Italian, with notes of berries, cherries, violet and tobacco.
Perfect with grilled pork or lamb, perhaps with mushroom and asparagus risotto for dinner on Sunday?
