Friday's wine tasting will feature Zonda Wines from Argentina:
Zonda produces an exceptional Malbec at this price range.
Not another jammy bomb, this red displays finesse, detail and color.
Their Chardonnay-Viognier is a lovely surprise - tropical fruit and some residual bitterness with the gloss of Chardonnay. Perfect with cod seared in butter with capers.
Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier $14
Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier is a new white wine gem from the San Juan region of Argentina, just north of Mendoza. San Juan is Argentina's second largest wine producing province and one of the sunniest places on earth, with fewer than 30 cloudy days per year. XumeK means Sun in the language of the Huarpe people, the original inhabitants of the Cuyo region, which includes the provinces of San Juan, Mendoza, San Luis and La Rioja.
The Zonda label was created in 2009 for more modern, easy-drinking wines. The Santa Sylvia estate is the site of a relatively new venture that comprises 200 hectares under vine, 165 hectares of olive trees, and a Nandu farm (the Argentine equivalent of the ostrich). It is located in the upper Zonda Valley, at the foot of the Andes Mountains, at 3,000 feet above sea level, in Southern San Juan.
A constant dry wind known as the Zonda flows down the Andes and provides vines with further protection from disease, preventing any use of pesticides or other chemical products.
Zonda Chardonnay-Viognier is medium in body with good acidity. It is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Viognier, offering aromas and flavors of green apples, citrus, honey and spice. This refreshing white blend is long and balanced on the finish. PERFECT with chicken empanadas, grilled shrimp, roast chicken and Cobb salad.
Zonda Malbec $14
Steven Tanzer 87 Points:
Full ruby-red. Black fruits, licorice, pepper, cocoa powder and game on the nose and palate, lifted by violet and minty nuances. Seamless and firm, with a fine-grained texture and a nice light touch.
These are great wines with exceptional value. As we always like to point out - its easy to spend 30 or 40 dollars and get a great bottle of wine - the fun is spending less than twenty to find one that drinks like the "big boys."
Stop in on Friday night and try a little Zonda for yourself.
