Perrin vs. Montpertuis - It's Go Time!
Over the last few months the normally subdued and elegant winemaker Paul Jeune decided that enough was enough. He took up bodybuilding, ran marathons and started fighting in the streets just "for kicks."
Admiring his newly ripped physique, Paul barked to his handlers (in a thick French accent) "Domaine Montpertuis is now ready to take down the house of Perrin!
"Chez Bastaard!...your time has come...."
Over at "Chez Beaucastel" on the ritzy side of town, winemaker Marc "Prince of the Rhone" Perrin was interrupted from his fencing class and served with the news:
"Paul Jeune has issued a challenge! - He wants a chunk out of your derrière,
Mon ami'" Marc, a Judo expert, appeared unfazed and continued to sip his mineral water, but internally he perceived the terrible challenge that lay ahead if a battle with his nemesis "The Master from Montpertuis" was truly inevitable.
It would require - fortitude.
You Be The Judge - Let's Go To The Ring:
In the
Domaine Montpertuis corner:
Cotes-du-Rhone Vignobles de la Ramiere $16
Bright and well-crafted, with up-front raspberry, nectarine and cherry flavors and nicely layered spice notes. A medium-bodied red that will stand up well to very well to food - Grenache 90%, Syrah 10%.
Domaine Montpertuis Cuvee Counoise $14
Score wine-geek points by being first in your Zip Code to drink this velvety and rare Counoise in its 100 percent varietal form.
As this rare grape isn't on the mainstream radar, a bottle of it is still cheap. The spicy sun-drenched plum and dried rose petal become seductive. It gives off red berries aromas, and scents of leather and undergrowth. In the mouth its strength and power are obvious. It perfectly expresses its terroir with powerful yet soft tannins. This is hard to beat.
In the Perrin corner:
Perrin et Fils Cotes-du-Rhone Villages $15
WS 90pts. - According to the Wine Spectator:
Very pure, with gorgeous plum and black cherry aromas and flavors laced with enticing spice, graphite and violet notes. Long, very silky finish. Delicious.
Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes-du-Rhone $30
Robert Parker: This blockbuster Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet, is always one of the best bargains from the south, it may be the finest Coudoulet ever produced. A blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Cinsault, and a few other authorized varietals, is incredibly opulent and rich, with sensational notes of black currants, licorice, smoked herbs, and meat juices, a full-bodied mouthfeel, savory tannins, and good acidity as well as length. This outstanding wine can be drunk now or cellared for 10-15 years.
