The Villian's Voice: How to find the authentic voice of your antagonist |
Presented by children's author Margaret Speaker Yuan.
Writers are often given the advice that we should get into our characters' heads in order to learn their motivations and desires. This advice is easy to accomplish for our protagonists, but in the case of villains, it can be very tricky. How do we understand evil characters, and more importantly, how do we portray what they want effectively and authentically?
It's a critical question, since overcoming a weak villain creates a weak hero. In this workshop, we'll examine great literary evildoers. The presentation will focus on how to clarify the antagonist's motivations and strengthen the villain's voice.
