Greetings!

Three Sisters traveled to Haiti for the May 22nd ordination and consecration of the Rev. Ogé Beauvoir, the first elected Suffragan Bishop of Haiti, to serve in the Northwest of the island country. Sister Promise from Neale House in New York City and Sister Claire Marie and Sister Marjorie Raphael from Boston joined the Sisters in Haiti - Sr. Marie Margaret, Sr. Marie Thérèse, Sr. Sarah and Sr. Kethia - for this event, making a community of seven.  Père Beauvoir is  Sister Claire Marie's cousin, and he has been an Associate of the Society of St. Margaret for over twenty years.

The 50th Anniversary of the Foyer Notre Dame

Madame Felix

Another one of the ministries of the Sisters of St. Margaret in Haiti, the Foyer Notre Dame, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Founded by Sr. Marjorie Raphael in 1962, it is a home for elderly people who are alone or whose family is not able to fully care for them.

For more information about the Foyer Notre Dame, visit the Haiti Update page of our website and scroll down. You will also find a link to the Wish List of items that are always needed at the Foyer. There is a slideshow of five of the current residents at the bottom of the page. Just click on "The Ladies of the Foyer Notre Dame" to view the photos.

Our Mission Continues

In addition to all of the activity in Roxbury, Duxbury and Haiti, our mission work continues in our other locations - Dorchester and New York City.

Sr. Christine continues her chaplaincy work  in Boston at the Suffolk County House of Correction on Wednesdays, Sundays and Fridays and has recently completed additional training on prisoner's rights.

Sr. Julian ministers with children, teaching Sunday school at St. Stephen's Church in South Boston on Sunday, doing the after school program St. Augustine and St. Martin's Church in Boston on Tuesdays, and tutoring reading for Generations, Inc. at St. Stephens after school program on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  On Friday mornings she tutors at Dever School in Dorchester and on Friday afternoon she teaches art at the Hawthorne Youth and Community Center in Roxbury. She will also be participating in the Be Safe program this summer.

Sr. Mary Gabriel provides transportation for Sr. Julian and Sr. Christine, and does the shopping, cooking, bill paying & banking.

The Sisters attended the installation of the new Rector at St. Cyprian's, Roxbury.  Sr. Julian went to the Deacon's ordination when Meghan Sweeney, a member at St. Stephen's, was ordained.  The Sisters worship at St. Mary's, Dorchester, St. Stephen's in the South End, All Saint's Church in Ashmont and at the Chapel at the House of Corrections. The Sisters will remain as a presence in the Diocese and will not be relocating to Duxbury at present.

In New York City, Sr.  Gloria, Sr. Ann and Sr. Promise are busy ministering in various ways at Trinity Church Wall Street.

Sr. Promise works in the sacristy at St. Paul's Chapel, and she is part of the pastoral care team at Trinity, visiting with people and spending time with them in a ministry of presence and taking the Sacrament to the home bound. She coordinates the Sunday School, teaches Godly Play, organizes and takes part in the healing ministry. She participates in the Bible study at St. Margaret's House and is a chalice bearer at Trinity. She is also continuing her studies at nearby Pace University.

Sr. Ann offers hospitality to visitors at the Welcome Center, is a lay reader and chalice bearer, teaches 2 and 3 year olds in Sunday School, and does a Bible study with the residents of St. Margaret's House. She continues to be a part of the pastoral care team as well, and she assists with the healing ministry and the Brown Bag Lunch program.

Sr. Gloria primarily works doing pastoral care all over the city, visiting the ill and shut-ins and taking the Sacrament to them. She is a listening presence to them and will pray with them, if they request it. She takes part in New Beginnings, a group for senior citizens. Along with Sr. Ann, she is part of the healing ministry team. They participate in the laying on of hands after every Eucharist during the week at Trinity as well as Sundays. She also offers hospitality to visitors at the Welcome Center.

The Sisters in all of these locations continue to live the Religious Life with its round of liturgical observances, Eucharist, and the Divine Office.

Spirit and Light Capital Campaign

 Spirit and Light
The Spirit & Light Capital Campaign was developed to help the Sisters achieve sustainability. Moving to Duxbury will create wonderful new opportunities for ministry and renewal. The impact of these ministries with both individuals and groups will be felt far beyond any one location. We are excited about becoming permanent residents of the Duxbury community and being more involved with outreach programs on the South Shore while continuing our many diverse ministries in Boston, New York, and Haiti.

The move to Duxbury will free us to do the important work that God has called us to do. The Sisters of Saint Margaret stand at the threshold of a new and decisive moment in the life of our community, one that will carry our long history forward into an even stronger future. God has called us to give up old ways of doing things, and has now set before us the challenge of living our life of prayerful service in new ways and new settings.
