Join Grammy winning musician and Pulitzer Prize nominee Joel Thome, a stroke survivor, for this fascinating, powerful and heartfelt presentation, discussing powerful effects that music and art can have as forms of therapy. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 1998, Joel lost the use of his left arm and was forced to undergo years of recovery. Using music as a resource for healing, he was able to resume composing and returned to the stage to perform his graphically notated mandala scores. Thome will screen portions of the film Inside the Perfect Circle: The Odyssey of Joel Thome which documents the remarkable journey of this world-traveled composer and conductor. CALL FOR ARTISTS Urban Art Program Track: Barrier Beautification DOT, in collaboration with New York Cares, commissions artists and designers to produce murals for concrete barriers that typically separate bicycle lanes from lanes of vehicular traffic. Each spring DOT announces an open call for Barrier Beautification proposals. Individual artists are invited to apply. DOT selects project sites and, together with New York Cares, provides all project materials. DOT oversees design and project implementation. Artists are responsible for translating their designs onto the barrier sites. Murals remain installed for 11 months. Artists are eligible to receive up to $2,500 toward direct project costs. CALL FOR MARINE ARTISTS The Kiwanis Club of Greater Westhampton announces the First Annual Oyster Festival to be held Columbus Day weekend, Saturday, October 6 at the Westhampton Beach Marina on Library Avenue. Rain date is Sunday, October 7. One goal of the Oyster Festival is to raise awareness about our Waterways and the importance of preserving their Eco-systems. This will happen while enjoying oysters, clams, seafood, music, kids' rides and marine-related interests. The fee for a marine or martime art booth is $100. CALL FOR ARTISTS Applications now being accepted for the 2013 Golden Foundation Residency Program The Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts announced today that applications are now being accepted for its 2013 residency program. Through its residency program, the Golden Foundation provides artists a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore the widest, most innovative range of materials and technology available today for the professional artist working with paint. Located in the beautiful rolling hills of central New York and just several hundred yards from the Golden Artist Colors manufacturing facility, the Golden Foundation Residency is housed in a 19th century dairy barn which has been transformed into a 21st century artist residency, with large studio spaces and private apartments. CALL FOR ARTISTS: Rendering a New Home for the Patchogue Art Museum The Patchogue Art Museum (PAM!) is seeking renderings in any medium of its newfound home - a historic 101-year-old building in downtown Patchogue. The Museum was recently gifted wall space inside the Industrial Coverage Corporation (ICC) building, at 62 South Ocean Avenue. The ornate two-story white marble building was constructed in 1911 as Union Savings Bank and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum's open call to artists will accept interpretations of the ICC building exterior in any medium, with a $250 cash prize. CALL FOR ARTISTS & PERFORMERS for Long Island Fringe Festival 2012 Fringe advocates collaborative arts on Long Island. The Fringe Festival incorporates an art fair, an art show and a theater performance all into one, creating a cultural hub. In 2012 we have a true Long Island festival covering the next six months, featuring over 10 performances in more than half a dozen locations. Each show will vary in audience size from 50 to 400 and all shows will be 2 hours in length. Tickets will be sold on a per show basis at $10 each and one can purchase a festival pass for $50. Confirmed dates include SoLuna Studios in Hauppague, Ripe Art Gallery in Greenlawn, Angelina's Restaurant in Massapequa, Creative Art Studio in Sea Cliff,  Tilles Center in Brookville.
