Greetings!

This ezine was going to be all about celebration. After all, Jan Carley it's Jan-Fest!
Woo Hoo!  Sorry if it sounds self-indulgent, but I have, for several years, declared my birth month of March "Jan-Fest"...I mean why limit the celebration opportunities to a single day? I encourage you to expand your own birthday celebration. Your birth is worthy of at least a month long "festival"!

This month, however, I wanted to share with you a different theme that keeps popping up. This has been a tough year so far for a lot of my clients and friends, filled with a lot of transitions and changes, and it felt important to think about what to do when confronted by what sometimes feels like a barrage of life challenges.  See the feature article below for some tips I gathered from the unique Caribbean Divi-divi tree!

I also invite you to click here to download my free 15 page report, "5 Ways to Instantly Focus for Harmony and Success". This report is being sent to all of my new ezine subscribers and I wanted to make sure that I give my current loyal readership an opportunity to receive it.

Cheers!

Feature Article: What I learned from the Divi-divi tree

Divi-divi treeThe unique Divi-divi tree is native to the Caribbean and a popular tree in Aruba where, as a result of being exposed to the constantly blowing tropical trade winds, it has developed its characteristically bizarre bent over shape.

Much like the way the Divi-divi tree bends its form to an almost 90 degree tilt when continually being assaulted by the strong trade winds, we too, can often feel bowled over by adversity.

This has been a windy year so far for a lot of my clients and friends. It seems that many of them have been in the path of powerful adversity that has threatened at times to blow them over. No sooner does one strong wind hit them (a job loss, a major health issue)...then another follows right behind (a sick parent, a relationship dilemma ).

What can you do, then, when you feel like you are consistently in the path of strongly blowing trade winds?  How do you possibly keep a positive outlook when you can barely keep your feet on the ground?  Let's take our cues from the Divi-divi tree.

What I learned from the Divi-divi tree Aruba Divi-divi tree

1/ Lean away from the wind:

Some say the Divi-divi tree is bent over from the wind...others say that the tree is bent over because it is leaning away from the wind. On purpose.  Consider your perspective - is the wind against you or are you going with it?  When adversity hits do you fight it? Or do you accept it and temporarily adapt? Is there a way that you can purposefully bend with your challenges?

Neale Donald Walsch (author of Conversations with God) reminds us that "What you are experiencing is temporary - whether it's "good" or "bad". So stop calling it one thing or another, and simply embrace it as "what's happening now".  You'll move through it all much more peacefully."

If you accept that whatever it is, is only "what's happening now", you will know that it, too, shall pass.

2/ Search for the greater purpose: The constantly blowing trade winds do have a purpose. Although they might be bending the Divi-divi tree in half, they have propelled trading ships across the ocean for centuries.  Consider the possibilities for your current challenges. Although you may not discover what that greater purpose is for some time, will it comfort you to know that the Universe is providing a purpose for everything we face in life? That one day you will know what the greater purpose is?

3/ Embrace your gifts:  Sometimes when we are faced by a barrage of challenges, we forget what we have in our lives that is working. More than ever, when everything seems to be going wrong, it is essential to remember and be grateful for what is going right; what we do have. The Divi-divi tree's unique shape provides wonderful and much needed and much loved shade for the donkeys; shade that they need to survive.  Actively search for the good in your life - your "shade for the donkeys."  Focus on the things that are going right in your life. Focus on what you do have, and be sure to nurture yourself until the winds pass. The Divi-divi tree will continue to stand. You will too!
