SAFETY LINES
Tom Barnowski
Corporate & Public Safety Director

Recently, a disheartened human resource director called for the current availability and delivery schedule of certain safety courses.   He lamented a need for OSHA Outreach Training to satisfy one of his customer's new business requirements. The HR director went on to inform me that without the required regulatory safety measures in place future contracts would be canceled. The pressure surrounding lost business revenues sent him scurrying to find and implement the required safety practices and training.

As we talked on the phone, I was surprised by his regulatory awareness but was dismayed by the apparent failure to implement safety practices at his facility. Clearly there was an erroneous management assumption that costs associated with safety would exceed their benefits. As the conversation continued, he asked me if this was a coming trend. The simple answer I offered was "yes."

Larger corporations and organizations are beginning to understand that association with "safety challenged" companies is bad for business. They have discovered that through the implementation of appropriate safety practices, production increases and Worker's Compensation premiums decrease. Production schedules are met because production is not interrupted by injuries. The trend to satisfy safety compliance is coming. Is your organization ready for the ramifications or is your HR director disheartened?
