Tough times require tough decisions. Easy to say but hard to implement, I understand. But having 'survived' several previous recessions I have gained rare experience both as an owner of several small businesses and as a small business growth coach. We all know hindsight is 20-20, and I encourage you to think about the following points:
- Misery loves company, so stop talking to fellow business executives who only talk about how bad things are.
- Cash is king, so keep your eyes on your cash flow.
- Learn from others. In tough times an experienced outsider can often see what you don't AND help you make those tough decisions that must be made.
- Don't loose your optimism. Good times are on their way back as I speak.

Advertise in a Recession?
Yes, is the short answer. To explain why takes a few more words. McGraw-Hill Research (probably the biggest in business media) conducted research after the 1981-82 recession and found the following: - Businesses that maintained and/or increased advertising averaged significantly higher sales growth both during and after the recession even for 3 years beyond.
- Another research study regarding the 1990-91 recession reported businesses that maintained or increased advertising grew market share substantially.
I would add a note that some pretty successful new companies started in recessions: Charles Schwab started in the 1970's recession and Microsoft started in the recession of the 1980's. Wemmers.com

Future Social Trends For Business To Note
It's clear our world is changing no matter where we are in it. Here are 4 trends worth keeping in mind as you plan future growth: - More and more workers are backing away from being a workaholic. They want less stressful activities in their daily lives.
- Target marketing and advertising will be the rule, not the exception to reach customers and prospects.
- Youth education will become more and more of an issue. The U.S. is behind.
- Business will have to get accustomed to taking higher risks in marketing.

On-Line Advertising Proof Is Missing
The rapid rush of advertisers to the Internet has not proved to be a good move for many, many businesses. This 'herd' instinct has been reduced with the recession. Calmer minds are now asking: " What evidence do we have as to the ROI of our online ad expenditures? Is sales the only measurement?
In a recent survey evidenced that only 23% of online business advertisers said they had satisfactory measurement results. WOW! So why do so many businesses keep pouring money online?

A Great Time To Upgrade Your Work Force
Manpower, Inc. just conducted an employer survey and found there is a dramatic shortage of certain skilled workers. Most just don't have the desired combination of skills, experience, training and soft skills. The hardest jobs to fill are: engineers, nurses, teachers, sales reps., drivers, technicians, laborers and machine operators. I would suggest you look at your work force and see which 'low performers' you should replace. Manpower, Inc. May 2009

"As you pass this little church, be sure to plan a visit, so when at last you're carried in, God won't ask "Who is it?"A sign in front of a church in AustraliaA lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store but she couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, 'Do these turkeys get any bigger?'
The stock boy replied, 'No ma'am, they're dead.'
