Executive Conference RoomCommunity banks continue to get mixed signals from Washington and the economy about the future. Rumors are numerous about what the typical bank should do. Some are bailing fast to keep their loan portfolio from sinking them. Some are enjoying record profits. Others are still waiting for TARP funds.

And believe or not some are launching a pro-active effort to take customers from big banks and other community banks. While this seems scary it is working to shore up core deposits and put some good news to the bottom line.

I say again: This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Go for it!

M&T Bank in Baltimore, MD has hit an opportunity by offering 3% interest rate to its' online customers. There is no guarantee this interest will stay the same but the customer has 24/7 control to move the funds. There is no minimum balance or monthly fees. For Americans who are holding tightly to whatever cash they have, this is a good place to get some interest for it. (I know some banks are doing this for new business accounts. Bank Merger Activity To Grow in 2009

New IRS incentives that reward institutions to take over failing competitors, although temporary, will increase the number of mergers - soon. Some folks even say the TARP monies will help stimulate this activity. Of course we all know that when eyes are focused on mergers they usually don't pay as much attention to "knitting at home" as they should, leading to current customer dissatisfaction. And some of the "merged" customers will start looking for a new bank.

Does 'Green Banking' Pay Off?

According to a recent national study, over 75% of U.S. adults believe "society can solve big problems with the environment by getting lost of people to do just a little." About 22% of those consumers say that green initiatives cement the bond they have with their bank. Some 68% agree they like to do business with companies that are environmentally responsible. But be careful, 72% resent companies that say they care about the environment but don't mean it.
