Silver Bullets for Bank Growth

ABA LogoThis morning's newspaper headline says it all:  Synovus Bank captures $1.4 Billion in new deposits during the last six months of 2008.  If banks are pro-active they can gain new core deposits. And in my personal experience I see community banks, which are pro-active in the right manner, making significant gains too.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, NOW is the time to reach out and capture high quality new small business accounts. This opportunity will not last much longer.

It's a New Year so let's put our best sales people out on the street, showing we want to give value first and then ask for the business. Let's be creative in bundling products into new options. Let's get the minds of our staff off 'how bad it is' and put them on 'how good it can be'.

Bank Branch "Friendly Factor" Flunks

A recent J.D. Power study among community banks gave poor scores for efforts by bank personnel to greet and engage new customers. One-third did not offer to shake hands; one-half did not smile and 14% didn't give their full attention to the person. Most bankers only asked 5 questions to profile the prospect; some only asked 3 questions. It appears bankers were a little too quick to offer solutions and some didn't offer any recommendations. (We train bankers to ask more questions, listen closely to responses, offer several solutions and listen for the prospect to make the first choice. You win more when you let the prospect 'buy' verses the banker 'selling'.)

Credit Unions Creeping Up On Local Banks

While only about 25% of America's credit unions are actively seeking small business accounts, the efforts are making headway. Credit union growth efforts offer some good tips for community banks. Some credit unions go to business prospects and deliver seminars on planning for retirement, saving for college expenses and other financial stewardship content. They also offer free checking, free bill-paying and of course low interest loans. Now is the time for community banks to be more pro-active with 'giving value before asking for the business.'  Atlanta Business Chronicle
 
Union Bank AtmoreBanker Innovation Meets Unique Market Needs; Makes Money

United Bank in Atmore, Alabama now offers "Personal Storage Compartments". These are not safe deposit boxes but serve a definite customer need. Located near the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and in prime hurricane territory this bank researched the market when its' safe deposit boxes weren't being rented. Robert Jones, President, saw a European idea and decided to try it at two of his branches closest to the coast. Bank customers can rent a Personal Storage Compartment for $100 per year and access it most any time. The storage units are housed in a facility that looks much like the public post office boxes for rent at places like UPS Store. According Jones, business is booming. ABA Banking Journnal
