"Appalachian Spring" on February 28 -   2:00 PM at Heinz Hall
 
The second of PYSO's free Heinz Hall concerts this season will take place on Saturday, February 28 at 2:00 PM  and will begin with the Russian Sailor's Dance by Gliere, in a side-by-side performance with the Erie Junior Philharmonic.
 
Looking forward to warmer temperatures, Co-Principal Conductor Lawrence Loh will lead the orchestra in one of the great American works of the 20th century, Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, most famous for the beautiful Shaker tune, "Simple Gifts".
 
After intermission, Dancers from Attack Theatre will join PYSO on stage in excerpts from the Three Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla, led by Music Director Daniel Meyer.
 
Join PYSO in helping the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank by bringing a canned or boxed food item donation to the concert (please no glass items). Collection boxes will be located at the front entrance to Heinz Hall. (Item suggestions:  Peanut butter, canned tuna, canned milk, canned fruits, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, toilet paper, toothpaste, diapers, soap, shampoo.)

Concert length is approximately one hour and 45 minutes including one intermission. Appropriate for adults, families, school age students and older.

PYSO's E-Ticketing System
 
Beginning with the November 2008 concert, tickets for PYSO's free concerts at Heinz Hall became available via our new e-ticketing system.
 
All you have to do is visit our Performances and Tickets page on our website and click on the link for ordering tickets. Please note that if you want to order tickets for more than one concert, you will need to place more than one e-ticket order.
 
If for some reason you are having difficulty with the new system or you are unable to print your tickets, please send an email or call us at 412-392-4872.

Harpist Wins PYSO Concerto Competition
 
Lana Greenwald, HarpistPYSO's annual Concerto Competition took place on January 11, 2009 at which time 20 current members auditioned for a panel of judges that included Lawrence Loh, Jeffrey Turner, and Craig Johnson. 
 
Harpist Lana Greenawald was named the winner and will perform Ravel's Introduction and Allegro as a soloist with PYSO on its May 3, 2009 Heinz Hall concert. 
 
Honorable mention was given to Leigh Poulton, who performed C.P.E. Bach's D Minor Flute Concerto.
 
Auditions for the 2009-10 Season
 
The next round of annual auditions - for the 2009-10 season - will take place in April 2009 at Heinz Hall. Advanced students up to and including college age may apply. Each audition will begin with a solo of choice (normally no more than one minute will be heard) and should be something that shows each player to the best of his or her ability. The rest of the audition will be the orchestral excerpts specified on our website under auditions and membership.

Prior to the auditions, there will be an optional audition workshop on Saturday, March 21 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Heinz Hall. This will consist of a general information session about preparing for auditions, then each student will have the opportunity to play at least one excerpt from our audition repertoire list and get immediate feedback from PYSO coaches. Please send an email or call 412-392-4872 to sign up for the Audition Workshop. Workshop fee is $10 and is payable on the same day as the workshop.
 
PYSO Apparel & Chinese Auction

The PYSO Parents Association is hard at work on two fundraising projects this year.  Clothing and other apparel can be ordered with PYSO logo, including jackets, shirts, lounge pants, and more. Deadline to place an order for Spring delivery is February 28.

Also, a Chinese Auction comprised of "treasures" brought home from the China Tour will be displayed at the February 28 concert, with the drawing to be held after intermission that day.

Congratulations to the following PYSO members on their recent awards and accomplishments:
 
Jad and Salem Hilal's (violin and cello) String Quartet was chosen by The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra as the LPO Rising Stars for 2009. They performed at the Laredo Civic Center Auditorium in January, 2009. William DeLelles (percussion), Klara Pinkerton (cello), Diana Shi (violin), Hope Vanucci (violin), Leigh Poulton (flute) and Jeremy Malvin (percussion) are all winners of the 2009 Pittsburgh Concert Society's Young Artists competition. They will perform their pieces this March at Kresge Recital Hall, College of Fine Arts, Carnegie Mellon University. Dan Smith (viola), Kathryn Feczko (violin), Benjamin Robert Thurau (bass) have been selected for 2009 MENC All-Eastern Honors Orchestra, which will perform in Providence, Rhode Island this coming March 12-15. Jeremy Malvin (percussion) placed second in the McKeesport Symphony Orchestra 2009 Young Artists Competition. Jad Hilal (violin) was Concertmaster of PMEA District 1 Junior High Orchestra for the second year in the row.   Brendan Yeh (violin) and Daniel Orsen (viola) also participated in the PMEA Junior High School District Orchestra this past January. Leonardo Pellegrino (clarinet) has been selected as the baritone saxophonist in the 2009 Grammy Jazz Band.  Under the direction of Justin DiCioccio of the Manhattan School of Music and Dr. Ron McCurdy of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, Leo will perform with the 2009 Grammy Jazz Band at various GRAMMY Week events including the GRAMMY Celebration® After Party and, for the first time ever, at the MusiCares® Person of the Year tribute, which this year will honor Neil Diamond. Congratulations to the PYSO members who were chosen to participate in the PMEA District Orchestra and Band in February 2009: Ben Brodie, Adam Janssen, Chris Kang, Alexander Pape, Olivia Ren, Jeffrey Yeh (violins) - Heather Powell (viola) - Salem Hilal (cello) - Elise Charters, Matthew Pfeuffer (basses) - Jeremy Hois (oboe) - Kaitlyn Reho (clarinet) - Brett Freithaler, Joseph Merchant, Luke Plizga (bassoons) - Donald Huang, Jamison Ignatius (French horns) - and Evan Harger (trombone).
 
 
PYSO in the Community

PYSO's Montgomery Fellowship String Quartet presented a program for Symphony North on January 20 and they will perform at a benefit for the Homeless Children's Education Fund on March 9 at Oxford Center.

PYSO has been invited to participate in the opening festivities for the new Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh on April 2.  Various groups will be performing throughout the evening for this very special event.

Small ensembles (string, brass, woodwinds, percussion, harp & flute) are available to play for community gatherings or events.  Please contact the PYSO office for more information.
