Thompson Wins Close Race Former four-term Governor Tommy Thompson claimed victory Tuesday night in the four-way race for the GOP nomination to face Democrat U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin of Madison in the general election race to fill the open seat being vacated by four-term Democratic U.S. Senator Herb Kohl of Milwaukee, which is a seat Democrats have held since 1957. Thompson won with only 34 percent of the vote but put together an impressive geographic coalition by comfortably winning rural counties in northern and western Wisconsin, running competitive in vote-rich southeastern Wisconsin and winning big in southern central counties like Dane (Madison) and Rock (Janesville/Beloit). Also, indications are that last minute undecided voters seemed to swing to the former popular Governor the last weekend, which helped him best his three opponents. When it's all said and done, we're Republicans, we believe in the future. We're going to make this country the country we always wanted to be, fiscally sound, capable of doing everything. . . . We're going to make America the best it can possibly be," (www.jsonline.com). Final Results for the Race are as follows: Thompson 197,950 - 34% Hovde 179,793 - 31% Neumann 132,959 - 23% Fitzgerald 71,955 - 12% Tommy vs. Tammy Thompson now faces Tammy Baldwin, 50, in the November 6th general election. Baldwin, who was elected to Congress in 1998 representing the state's Second Congressional District in south central Wisconsin, is openly gay and has focused her efforts in Congress on national health care and the promotion of fair trade policies. She serves on the House Commerce Committee. She ran unopposed for the Democratic Senate nomination and has been campaigning for the open seat for more than a year. Before the polls closed on Tuesday, Baldwin challenged the primary winner to three televised general election debates, including a debate in Wausau on Oct. 18 sponsored by Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Public Radio, the Journal Sentinel and WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) (www.jsonline.com). No word yet on whether Thompson has accepted her debate offer or has proposed a counter debate proposal. This week, both Baldwin and Thompson toured manufacturing facilities and began campaigning against each other and articulating their vision on the state's economy in separate media interviews. Baldwin, at a stop in Helios Solar Works in Milwaukee, said, "What voters are going to have on their mind when they go to the polls in November, I have no doubt, it is going to be jobs and the economy." Thompson agreed that the economy will be the central focus of the campaign, but told reporters and more than 150 employees at Husco International in Waukesha that he and Baldwin will offer two different visions. "You are going to make a choice which way you want our country to go," Thompson said. "It's as simple as that. This is not going to be an election where people are going to try and confuse you, to tell you one thing and then go do another. This is about the direction of country," (www.jsonline.com). A Marquette University Law School poll released Aug. 8 showed Thompson receiving 48% to Baldwin's 43%. The results show little change since an earlier poll in early July.
