Primary Election Contest Winner
Congratulations to Pat Goss, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association, for correctly picking that Tommy Thompson would win the Republican U.S. Senate Primary election. Goss correctly picked that Thompson would get 34 percent in the highly-contested race. For his election predicting talents, Pat will receive an Amazon Kindle or a $100 Amazon gift card.

The contest had great  participation with more than 80 percent of contestants predicting that Thompson would be the election winner 15 percent said Eric Hovde and 5 percent guessed Mark Neumann.

Capitol Consultants will have another contest for the November election, and we look forward to your participation.

US Senate Race Recap

Thompson Wins Close Race

Former four-term Governor Tommy Thompson claimed victory Tuesday night in the four-way race for the GOP nomination to face Democrat U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin of Madison in the general election race to fill the open seat being vacated by four-term Democratic U.S. Senator Herb Kohl of Milwaukee, which is a seat Democrats have held since 1957.

Thompson won with only 34 percent of the vote but put together an impressive geographic coalition by comfortably winning rural counties in northern and western Wisconsin, running competitive in vote-rich southeastern Wisconsin and winning big in southern central counties like Dane (Madison) and Rock (Janesville/Beloit). Also, indications are that last minute undecided voters seemed to swing to the former popular Governor the last weekend, which helped him best his three opponents.

In declaring victory, Thompson, 70,  said, "Ladies and gentlemen, Wisconsin is on a roll.

When it's all said and done, we're Republicans, we believe in the future. We're going to make this country the country we always wanted to be, fiscally sound, capable of doing everything. . . . We're going to make America the best it can possibly be," (www.jsonline.com).

Final Results for the Race are as follows:

Thompson 197,950 - 34%

Hovde 179,793 - 31%

Neumann 132,959 - 23%

Fitzgerald  71,955 - 12%

Tommy vs. Tammy

Thompson now faces Tammy Baldwin, 50, in the November 6th general election. Baldwin, who was elected to Congress in 1998 representing the state's Second Congressional District in south central Wisconsin, is openly gay and has focused her efforts in Congress on national health care and the promotion of fair trade policies. She serves on the House Commerce Committee. She ran unopposed for the Democratic Senate nomination and has been campaigning for the open seat for more than a year.

Before the polls closed on Tuesday, Baldwin challenged the primary winner to three televised general election debates, including a debate in Wausau on Oct. 18 sponsored by Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Public Radio, the Journal Sentinel and WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) (www.jsonline.com).

No word yet on whether Thompson has accepted her debate offer or has proposed a counter debate proposal.

This week, both Baldwin and Thompson toured manufacturing facilities and began campaigning against each other and articulating their vision on the state's economy in separate media interviews.

Baldwin, at a stop in Helios Solar Works in Milwaukee, said, "What voters are going to have on their mind when they go to the polls in November, I have no doubt, it is going to be jobs and the economy."

Thompson agreed that the economy will be the central focus of the campaign, but told reporters and more than 150 employees at Husco International in Waukesha that he and Baldwin will offer two different visions.

"You are going to make a choice which way you want our country to go," Thompson said.

"It's as simple as that. This is not going to be an election where people are going to try and confuse you, to tell you one thing and then go do another. This is about the direction of country," (www.jsonline.com).

A Marquette University Law School poll released Aug. 8 showed Thompson receiving 48% to Baldwin's 43%. The results show little change since an earlier poll in early July.

Paul Ryan Insight

Wisconsin Congressman Chosen for Number 2 Slot on GOP Ticket

Background

As you all know by now, seven-term  U.S. Representative Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) was chosen last Saturday by presumptive GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney of Massachusetts to be Vice President on the Republican ticket this Fall.

At age 42, Ryan is the first Wisconsinite to be a member of a national ticket from a major political party in the state's history. Two others - U.S. Senator and Governor Robert M. La Follette in 1924 and Governor Patrick Lucey in 1980 - ran for President and Vice President on third party tickets.

Ryan comes from a very well known family in Janesville. His father was an attorney who passed at away at the age of 56 when Ryan was only 16 years old. Ryan was very active in athletics and politics at Craig High School where he graduated in 1988.  After high school, Ryan attended and graduated from Miami University in Ohio in 1992 and then went to Washington, D.C. to work on Capitol Hill and as aide at a think tank led by former Congressman and Vice Presidential candidate Jack Kemp.

In 1998, at the age of 28, Ryan moved back home to run for the First Congressional District, which covers most of southern Wisconsin stretching along the Illinois border from Janesville to Kenosha. Ryan won the open seat and has held it ever since winning by comfortable margins every time. He is married to Janna and they have three children.

Ryan never served in the Wisconsin State Legislature in Madison, however, he has a very close relationship with Governor Walker and former Governor Thompson and members of the GOP leadership.

In Congress, Ryan has worked tirelessly on fiscal and budget issues and currently serves as the House Budget Committee Chairman. As Chairman, Ryan has authored and pushed through his budget plan known as the Path to Prosperty - A Blueprint for American Renewal, which focuses on reining in federal spending by reforming entitlements like Medicare and by reforming the nation's tax code by lowering corporate rates. The Ryan budget plan was passed by the Republican-led House earlier this year but was not considered at all by the Democratic-led Senate or by President Obama.

Impact on the Race

Polling from across the country is starting to come in on the political impact of the choosing of Paul Ryan on the GOP ticket. Some early indications are that the choice of Ryan has had little impact on the trajectory of the campaign.

In fact, according to Gallup on August 15,  "Mitt Romney's standing in the presidential election campaign has not changed materially in the immediate days after his announcement of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice-presidential running mate. The first four days of Gallup Daily tracking after Romney's announcement show 47% of registered voters saying they would vote for Romney and 45% for Barack Obama if the election were held today. The four days prior showed Romney at 46% and Obama at 45%."

The polling impact of Ryan on the ticket in his home, swing state of Wisconsin has not been determined yet by pollsters.

Ryan to Run for Two Offices on the Fall Ballot

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Paul Ryan will remain on the ballot for re-election to his seat in the House of Representatives. He can run both for vice president and for re-election to Congress thanks to a 1968 state law that permits a candidate to be on the ballot twice, but only if he or she is running for president or vice president.
