RECALL:  Gubernatorial Race Polling

This week two more polls were released that showed Governor Scott Walker beating his opponent, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, by margins of three to five points and reaching 50 percent of the vote in each of the polls.

These two recently released polls are consistent with several polls that were released last week that showed the incumbent Governor leading by the same or similar margins.

St. Norbert College - Wisconsin Public Radio Poll

taken May 17 through May 22
Random sample of 406 Wisconsin Residents - Likely Voters Only
Both landlines and cell phones were used

The survey found 50 percent of respondents backed the Walker, while 45 percent favored Barrett. The margin of error of the poll was plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Walker's job approval rating was 52 percent with 48 percent disapproving. The Governor's job perfomance have risen 14 points since last Fall according to the poll. The poll also found President Obama's job approval rating split was 54-45 percent, which is one point increase from the Fall poll.

Some other interesting crosstabs from poll are:

  • 51 percent of respondents who support Scott Walker think that one of Governor Walker's greatest successes is that he got the state finance's and budget under control.
  •  72 percent of respondents who support Tom Barrett think that his character of honesty and as a unifier is one of the strongest assets he will bring if elected Governor.
  • 57 percent of all respondents believe that the economy is the number one issue in this Fall's Presidential election.

We Are Wisconsin Poll
Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research
Survey of 472 likely general election voters

The union-affiliated We Are Wisconsin released a poll this week of showing Governor Walker beating Tom Barrett by a 50 to 47 margin with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

The poll shows a very polarized electorate with Barrett leading among Dems 93-7 percent and independents 50-44, while Walker led with Republicans 96-3 percent.

The survey also found Barrett's favorable-unfavorable split at 47-32 percent, while Walker's was 50-46 percent. Walker was down among independents 43-52 percent, while Barrett's split with them was 50-24 percent.

Absentee Voting Underway and Way Up

As of this Wednesday, more than 90,000 Wisconsin voters had already cast and absentee ballot for the June 5 recall election. That number is more than 20,000 above the 68,000 voters who voted absentee in the May 8 recall primary, according to the Government Accountability Board.

The absentee voting figures came out as a new poll (and several recent polls) have shown Governor Walker with a 5 percentage point lead over Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

In response to the increase number of absentee voters for the upcoming recall general election, both Republicans and Democrats are focusing their efforts on voter turnout through television, radio and print ads, direct mail, phone calls and door to door solitications. In response the increased absentee voting numbers, Democrats contend the race is tightening as spending begins to even in the final two weeks of the race. (www.jsonline.com).

In-person absentee voting started Monday across the state and runs through 5 p.m. on June 1.

Ad Round Up

Wisconsin residents continue to see the onslaught of constant televison ads as the June 5 recall election approaches. Below are a few of the new ads that have come out this week, but just in case we missed any or if you want to look at some previous ads, below are the two campaigns YouTube channels for direct links to their ads.

Governor Recall Election

The campaign of Mayor Tom Barrett released ad this week called "Answers." It is the second ad Barrett has aired that raises questions regarding the John Doe investigation in Milwaukee County. In the ad, Barrett, in advance of tonight's debate (the first of two debates) asks for Walker to answering any lingering questions that may exist around the investigation.

Governor Walker released another ad this week entitled "Spending." In the ad, the Governor is seated and talks directly to the camera and accuses his opponent, Tom Barrett, of reckless spending for supporting a $100 million trolley for Milwaukee County. Walker then pivots his message and talks about how his budget reform measures have put Wisconsin financially back on track and led to the creation of 30,000 new jobs.
