President Obama Visits Wisconsin
On Wednesday, Wisconsin was the center of the national political debate as President Obama visited Master Lock in Milwaukee. During his visit, the President spoke to the company's employees by highlighting his message of 'bringing jobs back to America.'
In his remarks the President said, "This company has been making the most of a huge opportunity that exists right now, to bring jobs and manufacturing right back to the United States of America, right now. During the State of the Union, I issued a challenge to America's business leaders: I said, ask what you can do to bring jobs back to your country, and your country will do everything we can to help you succeed," (www.jsonline.com).
The President was welcomed to Wisconsin by Governor Walker who presented the White Sox fan President with a Brewers' jersey.
In welcoming the President, Walker released the following statement, "I'm glad that the President highlighted two companies we worked with during the past year to create jobs in Wisconsin. I worked closely with the City of Wausau to bring Collaborative Consulting to our state. The President also mentioned Diamond Precision Products, another company our administration worked with to help them grow in our state. Finally, I was pleased to hear the President mention Caterpillar because their world- wide headquarters is in our state, and we are currently pushing legislation to streamline safe and environmentally sound mining to create more jobs in Wisconsin." |

State Capitol Happenings
State Representative Michelle Litgens to Not Run for Re-election
Representative Michelle Litgens (R-Vinland) announced this week that she will not be seeking re-election to the State Assembly. Litgens was elected in 2010 to represent the 56th Assembly District, which includes portions of Winnebago and Outagamie Counties.
In her announcement, Litgens said:
"Only a year and a half after I decided to run, I was fortunate to be part of a new group of leaders who've turned our state around and I am so proud to have been part of that team. Faced with a decision to pour my heart into another campaign or focus my time on my teenagers and family, I decided family had to be my priority. You only get a few short years with kids in high school and I don't want to miss watching them grow up. For that simple reason, I have decided not to seek a second term in the State Assembly."
Litjens joins her colleagues, Dan Meyer (R-Eagle River) and Richard Spanbauer (R-Town of Algoma), in deciding not to run for re-election this fall.
Senate Passes Wetlands Bill
The State Senate passed early Wednesday morning SB 368, which is legislation that reforms the permitting process for restoring weltands. The bill passed the Senate on a party-line 17 to 15 vote. The vote was delayed until after midnight on Wednesday morning due to a minority Senate Democrat's objection to the third reading of the bill during the floor debate that occured several hours earlier during the day on Tuesday.
According to the bill's supporters, the bill streamlines the wetland restoration process by utilizing new permitting tools like general permits for very small wetland impacts and levels the regulatory playing field by making Wisconsin's wetland regulations more consistent with federal law and other states. Opponents of the bill believe that the legislation will be harmful to the state's environment by drastically reducing the number of wetlands across the state.
Legislature In Session Next Week
The Assembly is planning to be in session on Tuesday, February 21 where it expected to take up the wetlands bill mentioned above along with several other bills. The Senate is also expected to be in next week, but no date has been set as of this writing. |
