Special Election Update: GOP 2-DEM 1
On Election Night in November 2010, Republicans captured enough seats to have a 60 Republican-38 Democrat-1 Independent majority. However, three Republican members of the Wisconsin State Assembly resigned from the Assembly seats that they were re-elected to join Governor Scott Walker's Administration.
The three former lawmakers who gave up their seats were:
- Mark Gottleib (R-Port Washington, 60th AD) now Secretary of the Department of Transportation
- Scott Gunderson (R-Waterford, 83rd AD) now Executive Assistant at the Department of Natural Resources
- Mike Huebsch (R-West Salem, 94th AD) now Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Administration
Since the beginning of the session Assembly Republicans have been operating with a 57 seat Republican majority, and after winning two out of three races tonight, will now be at a 59 GOP-39 DEM 1-IND majority, but are giving up 1 seat from their November elections results.
Political observers were paying the most attention to the 94th Assembly District (La Crosse) because it was the only seat whose voting history put it in play tonight. Former Rep. Huebsch had successfully held the seat since 1994, while further up the ballot Democrats were successful in winning the seat as well. Previous top of the ballot 94th AD winners included Democrats: Feingold '04, Jim Doyle '06, Obama '08, and Republicans: Walker '10, Johnson '10.
