Governor's Race: Walker and Barrett

First Debate Held:
Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett held there first debate last Friday, September 24, in Milwaukee.

During the 60 minute debate, Mayor Barrett, the Democratic nominee came out on the offensive attacking the three-term County Executive Walker on his management of Milwaukee County and on his record on economic development ac
ccording to most of the post-election debate coverage.

For most of the debate, Walker primarily focused on the moderators' questions instead of responding directly to Barrett's attacks.

Walker did talk in detail about the state's looming $2.7 billion deficit where he compared it to the economic situation he faced when he became county executive eight years ago and repeated his plan to call a special session on the economy immediately upon entering office (www.wispolitics.com).

The next Governor's Election Debate is scheduled for October 15.

Polls:
Rasmussen (Oct. 1):*
Walker - 50 %
Barrett - 44%

*Percentages based on leaning voters being included; when leaners are not included the latest Rasmussen Reports poll numbers are:
Walker - 46 %
Barrett - 44%

According to Rasmussen, leaners are those who initially indicate no preference for either of the candidates but answer a follow-up question and say they are leaning towards a particular candidate.  Rasmussen Reports now considers results with leaners the primary indicator of the race.

Lieutentant Governor:

This week, Republican Lieutenant Gubneratorial Candidate Rebecca Kleefisch (R-Oconomowoc) announced that she was treated for colon cancer in early September just 10 days before the contentious five-way GOP primary that she won overwhelmingly.

According to WisPolitics.com, Kleefisch, 35, told WISN-TV in Milwaukee, her former employer, that she had laparoscopic surgery Sept. 2 and her doctor has pronounced her cancer free. Her surgeon also said her prognosis is good.

Yesterday at  press conference with Repbublican nominee Scott Walker, Kleefisch said "I suppose I could have waited until Nov. 3, but there are enough people who know now. I do think it's important people know and they have that story of hope," Kleefisch said. "I do believe in miracles. I was very, very blessed. I got a really good gift in a really awful package."

State Legislature: Senate

This week, it was announced that Republican 31st District State Senate Candidate Ed Thompson (R-Tomah), who is challenging first-term incumbent Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma), has pancreatic cancers and will no longer be participating in public events during the final five weeks of the campaign.

Thompson, who is the Mayor of Tomah and the younger brother of former four-term Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, said this week that a cancerous tumor was discovered Tuesday at the bottom of his pancreas.

Thompson, who ran as a Libertarian for governor in 2002, said dropping out of the Senate race has never crossed his mind.

"It's definitely a bump in the road, but there's no way in the world I get out of this campaign," he said. "I plan on whipping the cancer and winning the campaign."

Thompson said his prognosis is good because the cancer was caught in time.

Vinehout said in a statement: "My thoughts and prayers are with Ed and his family today as he grapples with very difficult news. Five years ago my mother passed away after surgery for pancreatic cancer. I know well how difficult this time is. I wish Ed the best and hope and pray for his speedy recovery" (www.wispolitics.com).
