2010 Election Watch:
Governor's
Race: Tom
Barrett news
President Barack Obama visited southeast Wisconsin this past Monday to campaign on behalf of Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Obama, who early in the day, also visited ZBB Energy Corporation in Menomonee Falls to highlight the company's recent efforts of expanding its workforce during the last 18 months.
According to WisPolitics.com, Obama told workers at the modern battery maker
that the recession was the culmination of a decade that "fell like a
sledgehammer on middle-class families" and hit manufacturing particularly
hard.
Obama ticked off the investments his administration has made in the country's
infrastructure, tax cuts for small businesses, and emergency steps to prevents
the layoffs of hundreds of teachers, firefighters and police officers (www.wispolitics.com).
The President then traveled to downtown Milwaukee where he campaigned on behalf of the Milwaukee Mayor at a noon luncheon where the estimate 1,300 attendees paid a minimum of $250 a person to see the President. Early estimates are that the Barrett campaign raised at least $350,000 as a result of the President's visit.
In his luncheon remarks, the President praised Barrett's character by referencing the injuries the mayor suffered a year ago when
trying to help a woman outside of the Wisconsin State Fair.
He told the crowd
he'd met leaders who were able to get the snow plowed or garbage picked up. "That is some serious customer service from
this mayor right here," Obama said.
"That's the kind of act you don't hear about every day. He stepped in,
tried to help and sustained serious injuries. That's what counts as a
leader," he said. "That's a mark of real character. That's a person
who will fight for you each and every day." (www.wispolitics.com).

It is expected that the President will travel back to Wisconsin during the fall campaign to stump again on behalf of the Democratic nominee. Scott Walker news The Walker campaign rolled out the endorsement of a leading agricultural organization this week. The Wisconsin Dairy Business Association announced on Tuesday that it was endorsing the Milwaukee County Executive's Campaign for Governor.
In its endorsement, which is the first endorsement by any leading agricultural organization, DBA President Jerry Meissner stated, "Scott understands Wisconsin's dairy
industry is a vital component of our state's economy' Milk, cheese and other dairy products
represent over $26 billion in economic activity to Wisconsin each year."
To view the DBA's full press release of its endorsement of Walker, please click here: www.widba.com.
The Walker campaign also released two new television ads this week. The first ad latches on to the President's visit on Monday by highlighting Walker's opposition to the
planned high-speed rail line.
In the ad, Walker knocks Obama and Barrett because of their attempts to spend $810 million
on the project. Walker has said that he would use to "fix Wisconsin's crumbling
roads and bridges."

In his second ad that was released this week, Walker continues the image of the County Executive sitting on his couch with his tie loosened and sleeves rolled up and looking directly into the camera. In this ad, he talks about he can save $68 million by having teachers purchase their health benefits as part of the overall state health plan purchasing pool.

Mark Neumann news This week, Mark Neumann campaign continued with his attack on Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett by criticizing the Democratic candidate's appearance with President Obama on Monday in Milwaukee.
Neumann, who has been a consistent critic of the high speed rail project between Milwaukee and Madison, joined the chorus of Republican critics in attacking the President and Mayor's support of that project.
According to WisPolitics.com, Neumann also released this week a 60 second radio entitled, "Kicked Off." The ad discusses how he wrote a letter to each member of
the House telling them if he's kicked off the committee for voting his
conscience, "then I'm sorry I only have one committee to get kicked off of."
In the ad, Neumann, who bills himself in the ad as the "conservative for governor," speaks against career politicians and calls for term limits (www.wispolitics.com).

Joint Legislative Council Committees Begin Work
The State Capitol is rather quiet these days as a result of all 99 seats in the State Assembly and 17 seats in the State Senate who are back home on the campaign trail, which of course is combined with the first open seat for Governor in 28 years. However, there has been a some activity this week and will be for the next couple weeks ahead because of the convening a several Joint Legislative Council Committees that will work over the next few weeks to explore several issues in depth during the interim period of the Wisconsin's legislative calendar. According the Wisconsin Legislative Council's website, the Council's primary responsibility is to establish study
committees to examine major issues and problems identified by the
Legislature. The study committees appointed by the Council are made
up of Legislators and citizens who are interested in or
knowledgeable about the study topic. Citizens are used on these
committees to help educate the Legislature of the knowledge and
expertise of Wisconsin's citizens have on the complex issues being discussed.
Study committees
do most of their work when the Legislature is in recess. The
Council reviews the legislation recommended by the study committees
and, if a majority of Council members (12) vote for introduction,
the legislation is sponsored by the Joint Legislative Council (http://www.legis.state.wi.us/lc/committees/jointcouncil/index.htm).
