With the expected Monday announcement that Governor Jim Doyle will not seek a third term, the 2010 race for Governor will for the first time since 1982 not have an incumbent running for re-election on one of the political parties' tickets. The list of potential candidates will likely grow, but here is a current snapshot of who is or may be considering running in 2010. DEMOCRATS:- Lieutenant Governor Barb Lawton: Two-term Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin, had made news recently for publicly taking opposing positions from Governor Doyle, including this past week when she advocated returning the DNR Secretary to a Board Appointed position ($50,904.18 cash-on-hand in her campaign account).
- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett: Two-term Milwaukee Mayor and five-term US Congressman. Lost to Governor Doyle in the 2002 Democratic primary for Governor Doyle ($840,256.83 cash-on-hand in his campaign account).
- US Congressman Ron Kind: Seven-term congressman from Western Wisconsin. Has made news recently for his moderate stances on health care reform.
- Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk: Former statewide candidate for Governor and Attorney General and three-term Dane County Executive. ($12,372.68 cash-on-hand in her campaign account)
REPUBLICANS:- Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker: Three-term Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and five-term State Assembly member. Walker won re-election to a third term in 2008 with 60% of the vote. ($1,104,373.81 cash-on-hand in his campaign account).
- Mark Neumann: Former two-term congressman from Janesville. Neumann gave up his seat in 1998 to run for US Senate against US Sen. Russ Feingold and was narrowly defeated. Neumann is now a home builder in Nashotah. (Has not filed a campaign finance report yet)
