From your Mouth to our Ears!

Question:   Is it true that you're not doing breakfast any more?
- Ruth  Walsh

Answer:   Ruth, we are no longer doing skillet scrambles or waffles!  But that's it!  Everything else you loved is still on our breakfast menu.  If I remember right, your favorite was our Asiago Bagel Sandwich & Bill's favorite was our Irish Oatmeal with Bananas, Cranberries
& Pecans!  These are both available Monday - Saturday from 9 am - 11 am!  See you soon!
 - Deborah Keeton, Restaurant Manager

Comment:  I recently purchased 4 of Ready to Go entrees to use in our motor home.  Tonight we tried our first one, Wasabi-Crusted Chicken Breasts.  We were pleasantly surprised at how easy and flavorful it was.  So good we can't wait to try another.  Wish I had purchased more for this trip.  Next time.  Keep up the good work!  - Michelle Paradise

Feedback from our customers (both good and bad) is greatly appreciated!

You know you're getting old when...

Coffee Bean Bag Races
You know you're getting old when the majority of your staff know the phrase "Sorry, Charlie!"

Charlie the mascot tuna for Starkist was created in 1961.  The advertisements depicted Charlie as a hipster whose goal is to be caught by the StarKist company.

Charlie believes that he is so hip and cultured that he has "good taste," and is thus the perfect tuna for StarKist.

Charlie is always rejected in the form of a note attached to a fish hook that said "Sorry, Charlie."

The reason given by the narrator (voiced by Danny Dark) for the rejection was that StarKist wasn't looking for tuna with good taste, but rather for tuna that tasted good.

Charlie appeared in 80 Starkist commercials until he was retired in 1980.  Charlie made a comeback in 1991 when Starkist lauched a healthier line of tuna.

Stop by Pies & Plates on July 3rd!  We'll be having a "Speed Sitting Contest" all day long!

Yeah, I know...it's Seed Spitting, not Speed Sitting but sometimes when I talk words just come out wrong!  This is one phrase I have have never gotten right!

Sometimes my mispronunciations can cause a few chuckles!  Like last month when I told assistant city manager Kathleen Daily's dog Shammy to sit!

Not all Lettuce is Created Equal!

Cindee Roasting CoffeeNot all lettuce is created equal, but if you start your meal with a salad made of romaine lettuce you will be sure to add not only a variety of textures and flavors to your meal but an enormous amount of nutritional value.  Click here to learn more.

Salad Tip:  We use romaine lettuce in all our salads at Pies & Plates.  Our Caesar Salad has only romaine while the rest of our salads have a mixture of spring greens and romaine.  Spring greens are colorful and nutrient packed but they are tender and delicate and can produce a wimpy salad.  Adding a bit of romaine will help give your salad a fresh crispy texture!

Why does the American Flag have a Five Point Star?

Besty Ross FlagGeorge Washington's original pencil sketch for the flag indicated 6-pointed stars, a form he apparently preferred.  Betsy Ross, however, recommended a 5-pointed star. When the committee protested that it was too difficult to make, she took a piece of paper, folded it deftly, and with a single snip of her scissors, produced a symmetrical five-pointed star. This seeming feat of magic so impressed her audience that they readily agreed to her suggestion.  Click on the link below to learn how to make a perfect five point star with just one snip of the scissors!   Perfect five point star.

"We pulled up at the marina for an overnight stay after being at sea two days!  After hitting showers and washing off the salt spray, we set to work making dinner!  We were starving sailors!  In no time at all our Prepped & Ready entree was on the table.  It was soooo easy!  You should have seen the look on our slip neighbors faces when we told them we were enjoying Artichoke and Feta Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Lemon Dill Sauce for dinner!"

To Thump or Not to Thump That is the Question
Watermellon Photos

When I was very young my family lived in a small town called Beatrice, Nebraska.  Beatrice was close to the Kansas boarder and since there was no weigh station, trucks entering Nebraska had to stop at Beatrice's Coop Elevator to be weighed.  My dad managed the Coop and he LOVED watermellon!  You'd be amazed at how many of those trucks were JUST ONE WATERMELLON OVER THE WEIGHT LIMIT!

Our dad taught us that you could tell when a watermellon was ripe by the sound it made when you thumped it!  Not very scientific but how else could one tell?

Here are some tips on selecting watermellons from the National Watermellon Promotion Board:  When choosing a whole watermellon, look for one that is heavy for its size with a rind that is realtively smooth and that is neither overly shiny nor overly dull.  In additon, one side of the melon should have an area that is distinct in color from the rest of the rind, display a yellowish or creamy tone.  This is the underbelly, the place that was resting on the ground during ripening, and if the fruit does not have this marking, it may have been harvested prematurely, which will negatively affect its taste, texture and juices.

Tasting Tuesdays @ Pies & Plates -  Every Tuesday - Lots of Sampling Fun!
A Personal Note From CIndee

Coffee Bean Bag Races
Meet Bo (gray & white) and Buster (black and tan).  They are Pies & Plates mascots and they live at my house.  They are better known as "THE BOYS"!

This month Buster discovered the joy of lizard chasing.  He sits by the front door looking out the window for hours on end. When he spots one he barks enthusiastically to be let out.  More often than not, the lizard runs up the tree - just out of reach.  Buster will spend hours standing guard waiting for the lizard to come down.  Now I know where the term "dogged determination" comes from.  Buster never gives up!

Bo is our happy camper!   When I come home from work he leaps with joy and smoothers me with dog kisses.  He's eternally optimistic!   Even though I tell him I'm eating "people food" he sticks close by hoping to catch a crumb.  When I tell him he can't go with me, he'll jump into the car anyway hoping I'll change my mind.  He has hope beyond measure!

Seems there's a few things I can learn from the boys - dogged determination, hope beyond measure, showing affection generously!  I thank the Lord for allowing me to be "dog blessed"?

Keep the faith!

Cindee

PS:  Thanks to all of you who have been keeping my family, my staff and our business in your prayers.  And, thanks to to all of you who have dined or shopped at Pies & Plates this past month.  You have given us great encouragement!  We hope to see you soon and again and again all summer long!
