Women in Art
In honour of yesterday's International Women's Day we celebrate some of the unsung women artists of our city.
This week we had a visit from a client who brought in some Viola Depew paintings for conservation. Born in Stoney Creek in 1894, Viola was one of the many talented women who worked as art teachers, mentors, and pioneers in the creative community of Hamilton.
Women like Viola helped establish Hamilton as a creative center in its own right. Although sometimes overshadowed by their male counterparts, Hamilton women artists were passionate about their craft and very well organized!
The Women's Art Association of Hamilton formed in 1894 and is Hamilton's oldest arts organization. The work of the women in this group helped establish the Art Gallery of Hamilton and helped promote the talents of creative women in this city. The gallery still features an annual exhibition of the art from the WAAH and the Association continues to foster relationships between veteran women artists and emerging talents in Hamilton.
See the side bar for more information on the gallery's selection of women artists from Hamilton and beyond!
