Inuit art in Hamilton
We're very excited to have a collection of early pieces in the gallery with a special connection to Hamilton's past.
Hamilton's Sanitorium at Chedoke Hospital was home to numerous tuberculosis patients from Arctic communities in the 1950s. As occupational therapy some patients were given carving materials and produced small pieces of sculpture.
The Hospital Auxiliary shop on James Street South became one of the first sellers of Inuit art by offering pieces that patients at the San had created.
