 Featured Artist: Norval Morrisseau
[Part 2]
Last week we introduced a pair of early paintings from Norval Morrisseau. The paintings were purchased directly from the artist when he was located in Thunder Bay.
This week we will explore the legacy of Norval Morrisseau and introduce the second painting (seen here).
Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird) considered himself an Ojibway Shaman and painted the spiritual messages and images that came to him through visions. His unique style references traditional Ojibway imagery and narratives and is characterized by heavy black lines, pure colours and linear divisions. His style influenced a generation of artists and gave birth to the Woodland School of Art.
His work was first introduced in a Toronto exhibit in 1962 and sold out on its opening day. Called the "Picasso of the North" by the French Press, Morrisseau was one of the best known and most beloved Canadian artists. His work continues to be highly desired.
