 Featured Artist: Norval Morrisseau
[Part 1]
This week and next we will discuss two previously unknown pieces from the incomparable Norval Morrisseau, founder of the Woodland School of Art.
Last week we talked about discovering hidden treasures in your collection. The gallery currently features two paintings by Morrisseau which have never before seen the market. The pieces were acquired directly from the artist between 1968-1971 in Thunder Bay and were inherited by the current owner. They are truly a unique find and are an exceptional example of the artist's early work.
The above piece is painted in acrylics on kraft paper. It features Morrisseau's signature power lines and astral circles, forming a protective circle around a mother suckling two bear cubs. The imagery is powerful and provocative. The exquisite earth tones and richness of form instil in the viewer a sense of warmth and intimacy.
Stayed tuned for Part 2 when we discuss the life and art of Norval Morrisseau. |
