Blatchly Lithographs
In 1889 the Toronto Lithographing Company commissioned artist WD Blatchly to depict scenes from The Riel Rebellions (1870 - 1885).

Blatchly used soldiers' battlefield sketches to compile highlight illustrations of key battles. His paintings were produced as chromolithographs and sold to hotels, businesses and private homes.

Three of these lithographs are hanging on the gallery wall, featuring scenes from the latter part of the war, also known as the North-West Rebellion: Battle of Fish Creek(1885), Battle of Cut Knife Creek (1885) and The Capture of Batoche
(1885).

Fun facts:
The Capture of Batoche features one of the first illustrations of the Gatling Gun, an ancestor of the machine gun.

Conservation
Corner

We mentioned last week that the acids in framing mats can damage and discolour artworks.

Check the back of your artwork too.  Cardboard and paper backing contain damaging acids.

We can replace your artwork's backing with acid-free materials such as museum quality foam board.
