August 2012
Greetings!
With the end of our 80th Anniversary Festival just a few days ago, you might understand why we enjoy looking back over some of the highlights. But in a true retrospective spirit, we're also including clips in this message from previous seasons.
Moreover, you'll see some items below that refer to current and future ventures, as we continue keeping an eye on both the old and the new. And you can definitely look ahead to more and more remembrances of the 2012 season in the months ahead.

The Men Dancers: From the Horse's Mouth
One of the 2012 season's most talked-about offerings was a one-of-a-kind tribute to Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers conceived by Tina Croll and Jamie Cunningham. With a stellar cast including Arthur Mitchell and Lar Lubovitch, this unique presentation combined dance segments and personal reminiscences in a memorable way.

The Ballet Boyz
When Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt first brought their innovative company to the Pillow in 2008, who could have imagined that they would return four years later with a film crew in tow, recording episodes for a new dance reality television show on the Ovation network, A Chance to Dance? But that's exactly what happened, and here you can get a glimpse of Michael and Billy in performance at the Pillow. |
Gala Overture Video: Let's Dance Among the challenges of celebrating anniversaries such as the Pillow's 80th are finding fresh new ways to communicate our remarkable history. For the Season Opening Gala, a key member of the Pillow's top-notch video team, Benjamin Richards, teamed up with Preservation Director Norton Owen to create a short video that uses vintage clips in an inventive new way. You can experience it here on PillowTV, the Pillow's YouTube channel.

Award-Winning Kyle Abraham
To salute Kyle Abraham as he received the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award in June, Pillow Videographer Nel Shelby created a short video that was shown at the Season Opening Gala. Kyle is seen in performance excerpts from his company's most recent Pillow appearances, and he also talks about his work and his approach to dance-making. The dance world is taking increasing notice of Kyle's talent, as he's now at work on a premiere for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Barton Mumaw's 100th
Forever immortalized on the weathervane atop the Ted Shawn Theatre, Barton Mumaw was born exactly 100 years ago this month, on August 20, 1912. We pay tribute by once again calling attention to the solo from which his weathervane pose was derived, the Bach Bourrée. Enjoy it here while celebrating Barton and his immeasurable impact on Jacob's Pillow.
