Virtual Pillow Views
Greetings!

In the great Jacob's Pillow tradition of using the past as a lens for experiencing the present and anticipating the future, two of the new additions to our online offerings are connected to the just-announced 80th Anniversary Season.  Others are related to important birthdays being celebrated this month, and each of the highlights below can lead you into an enjoyable session of discovery among our ever-growing collection of online videos.

Another notable event this month is the Dance on Camera Festival screening of Never Stand Still, Ron Honsa's documentary on Jacob's Pillow which will be seen at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater on January 27.  You can find out more from the Never Stand Still website

Finally, please check out the "In case you missed it" links at the bottom of the page and watch for a new crop of online videos to be announced in early February.  There's always more to come!

Compagnie Käfig
It has been more than a decade since Compagnie Käfig's first Pillow appearance, but the clip seen here is as startling today as it was in 2001.  While this excerpt had already been selected several months ago to add to the hip-hop selections in Dance Interactive (now represented by Rennie Harris), the company's return to the Pillow has recently been announced - and this means yet another clip will be added in the near future.  The unusual graphic seen here was left on our dressing room wall in 2001.

Jason Samuels Smith
Again addressing a genre which is currently under-represented in Dance Interactive, we have chosen a clip of Jason Samuels Smith's 2009 performances, adding to the other tap rarities that you can find here. And once again, this selection also anticipates Jason's return to the Pillow in July as part of the rotating cast in From the Horse's Mouth: The Men Dancers. Those performances come on the heels of a two-week tap program in The School at Jacob's Pillow, proving that tap is alive and well here.
Ballet Genève dances Benjamin Millepied
A great new team was created when one of today's hottest young dance personalities, Benjamin Millepied, turned to the music of venerable composer Philip Glass for his duet entitled Closer.  Glass turns 75 this month, and his music has been used extensively for dance, with dozens of examples represented in the Pillow Archives.  But this work danced by Ballet Genève marks the first Dance Interactive entry with Glass music, offering a perfect opportunity to celebrate a landmark birthday.

Salute to Ruth St. Denis

Although there's no round number involved, this is also the birth month of Ruth St. Denis, who was born on January 27, 1879.  Of course, no special occasion is needed as an excuse to share a bit of priceless film that has not been seen widely since it was captured more than a half century ago.  With the recent addition of Jess Meeker's piano accompaniment, a 1949 silent film of St. Denis in Liebestraum comes alive again to thrilling effect. In the longest clip yet posted on Dance Interactive, the complete work may be seen here, including a brief curtain call.
