Virtual Pillow Views
Greetings!

The Virtual Pillow team is still bursting with pride because of a recent Washington Post article that dubs Jacob's Pillow Dance Interactive "a priceless treasury of history and art."  This month, we acknowledge our founder's 120th birthday with a new clip of Ted Shawn's Men Dancers, and salute two dance legends - Suzanne Farrell and Trisha Brown - with excerpts that commemorate upcoming milestones in their careers.

Ted Shawn's Men Dancers

Having earned the distinction of most-watched clip in Dance Interactive, a 1937 excerpt from Kinetic Molpai is now joined by another rare glimpse of Shawn's Men Dancers.  There's a fascinating story behind this one, as Shawn created Finale from The New World especially for an engagement with the Philadelphia Orchestra, but performed the work only twice.  An exceptional young musicologist, Daniel Callahan, has located the original recording that Shawn used to create the work and synchronized both film and music so that this dance may be seen for the first time in 75 years.  What a fitting way to celebrate Ted Shawn's birthday on October 21!

Trisha Brown Dance Company

Although Trisha Brown's work was already represented in Dance Interactive with a 1986 clip from her iconic Set and Reset, we are now able to commemorate her company's 40th anniversary with a brand-new excerpt from her latest work.  Others are commemorating Brown in upcoming weeks as well, with the awarding of the first Bessie award for lifetime achievement in late October, followed by the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize in early November.  As this minute of sublime dancing attests, Brown is still at the top of her game.

Suzanne Farrell: Beyond Ballet Technique

The Suzanne Farrell Ballet's current 10th anniversary tour is as good an excuse as any to look back on one of the most memorable PillowTalks in the 15-year history of this series.  The chance to hear both sage advice and personal reminiscences from one of Balanchine's greatest muses was an incomparable treat, and the Talk is now preserved in its entirety in the Pillow Archives.  We have posted just a brief sample, but it's enough of a taste to demonstrate why she is the only living ballerina to be selected by the Dance Heritage Coalition as one of its first 100 Irreplaceable Dance Treasures.

Keigwin + Company

Larry Keigwin's choreography can be seen in many places this fall - not only in Keigwin + Company's performances on tour, but also in the new Off-Broadway production of Rent and in the Guggenheim's Works & Process series.  Now a look back at their 2011 Pillow appearance is possible as well, with this choice duet from Love Songs added to Dance Interactive.  See if you agree with Pillow Scholar-in-Residence Suzanne Carbonneau's assessment that "Keigwin's humor contains the sting of acute analysis inside the joke."
