Mainers Feeding Mainers Program Gears Up for Summer
We are looking forward to another summer of partnering with Maine farmers to distribute fresh, nutritious produce to Mainers struggling with hunger. This summer, through the Mainers Feeding Mainers program, we will be purchasing products, including tomatoes, squash, beans, and much more, from 19 farms around the state. Many farms also donate surplus product throughout the season.
Fresh produce will be available to partner agencies at all three distribution centers this summer. Several farms will be delivering directly to the Brewer and Portland warehouses to ensure timely distribution. In addition, we are in the process of acquiring a "Veggie Mobile" that will pick up produce from farms and distribute it to agencies at centralized drop off locations throughout the state.
While the distribution of fresh produce always depends on how successful the growing season is, we are excited about the prospects of Mainers Feeding Mainers this season. With your help, we will distribute more locally grown food this year than ever before. |

Spotlight On: Food Safety
Don't forget - to ensure the safe distribution of food to people in need, every partner agency should have at least one person trained in food safety. Last year we conducted regional trainings to get everyone on board. It's important to remember that the certifications follow the individual staff member or volunteer and not the agency.
If you've experienced staff or volunteer turnover - you may need to check and see if you need to train someone new. Call us in Auburn to find out when we're training again. Alternatively, there is an inexpensive online training by ServSafe available at your convenience, 24/7, at the following link:

Recipe of the Month
Hearty Rice Skillet
1-15 oz. can black or kidney beans
1 can diced tomatoes
2 cups mixed vegetables
1 cup water
3/4 cup instant brown rice
4-5 dashes hot pepper sauce
1 can condensed tomato soup
1/2 cup shredded cheese
Salt & pepper to taste
In a large skillet, stir together beans, tomatoes, vegetables, water, uncooked rice, hot sauce, and salt & pepper. Bring to a boil; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until rice is tender. Stir in soup, heat through.
Before serving, sprinkle cheese on top. Serves four.
