Food Mobile Program Sees Continued Success
2010 was the most successful year in the Food Mobile's history, with 672,000 pounds of food distributed in 92 deliveries. The Food-Bank staff is working hard to continue the program's success in 2011.
On April 22, Good Shepherd Food-Bank brought a Food Mobile to Jewish Family Services in Portland. The distribution was scheduled for the hours of 11 to 2. The line started to form at 8:15 in the morning and by the time the truck rolled in it had grown to more than 300 people. This represents nearly 700 people being served by the mobile food pantry. We were very fortunate; it was warm and sunny for the event. The mood of everyone in attendance was joyful and upbeat.
Four members of the Food-Bank's staff were on hand to join the other volunteers there to help the day go off without a hitch. It's wonderful to see community members come together in an effort to meet such an important and common goal.

Spotlight On:
SNAP (Food Stamp) Outreach
We have great news from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Office of Integrated Access and Support (OIAS) will soon be launching an Electronic Access Portal that will feature an online pre-screening tool and application for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Food Supplement (SNAP/Food Stamps), and MaineCare.
After the launch, people in need of assistance will be able to send their application materials securely through their web browser. This level of accessibility will enable community agencies like yours to assist the working poor and elderly through the benefit application process.
This advancement is great news for our state network of agencies and our effort to end hunger. With the availability of online applications, outreach workers will be able to work with clients to help them apply for benefits, which will relieve some of the pressure on pantries that struggle to meet their recipients' needs.
