New Food Mobile Doubles Impact of Program

Food MobileIn late April, Good Shepherd Food-Bank employees watched as a new Food Mobile pulled up to the Food-Bank. The 10 bay, partially refrigerated beverage style truck is a welcome addition to the Food-Bank's fleet. The truck features retractable awnings and recessed tables to ease food distribution. The new Food Mobile was made possible by a grant from Kraft Foods.

The Food Mobile program has been in operation at the Food-Bank since 2005. To date, nearly 1.2 million pounds of food or 923,000 meals have been delivered throughout Maine to 188 locations using the original Food Mobile that was donated by Federal Distributors of Lewiston. In 2009, nearly 15,000 individuals were served through the Food Mobile an average of seven days worth of food.

Having two Food Mobiles will double the impact of the Food Mobile program by allowing for more distribution points throughout the state. It will also increase the Food-Bank's capacity to respond to natural disasters and other critical incidents where emergency food distribution is necessary.

The new Food Mobile prepares to serve more than
80 clients at The Root Cellar on May 21.

Expanding Our Reach

Later this month the Food-Bank will open a new warehouse and distribution center at 111 Pinetree Industrial Parkway in Portland. The 20,000 square-foot facility will help supply food items to more than 140 food pantries, soup kitchens, after school programs, shelters and other non-profits in Cumberland and York counties.

This facility creates greater access to emergency food for agencies serving Southern Maine and will provide companies delivering food to the Food-Bank with a more convenient
drop-off location.

Defining Hunger

Here are a few terms that the Food-Bank commonly uses but are often misunderstood.

Food Insecurity:
The availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or the ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways is limited or uncertain.

Undernutrition: A nutritional deficiency resulting from lack of food or from the inability of the body to absorb it.
